Samsung's 8K QLED TVs are on sale now, while LG's has launched an 8K OLED in selected markets including Korea. It should make for an interesting comparison. Every one of the company’s 2018 OLEDs can also handle High Frame Rate (HFR) signals, although that’s more of a feature for the future than something you’re likely to be taking advantage of immediately. Inputs include four HDMI ports, all of which support 4K and HDR input. Unlike the Sony AF8 OLED, the LG C8 OLED doesn’t use big plastic panels to hide cables. This isn’t an issue for me: I rarely look behind my TV. The operating temperature shows the safe temperature range (from minimum to maximum), within which the display will function flawlessly. The operating humidity shows the acceptable level of humidity, in which the display will function flawlessly. Consider that the TV is essentially inventing three-quarters of the picture, and the smoothness, detail and cleanliness of the image is downright miraculous. This is a markedly sharper, more detailed and punchier picture than that offered by LG’s 2017 OLEDs, even without Vivid mode active. A sun-baked ridge of dunes is a gloriously rich, burnished orange, the seemingly endless canopy of a rainforest is lusciously, vividly green. The ocean surrounding a tropical island combines beautiful, enticing aquamarine around the shore with steadily, subtly deepening shades of blue out to the ocean. As with last year’s models, the C8 also allows you to experience dynamic metadata thanks to its Dolby Vision support, and in most cases this results in even greater contrast and stronger colours. Like all OLED TVs, the LG C8 enjoys pixel-level luminance, where each pixel is able to turn on and off individually. That means remarkable lighting precision that beats even the most accomplished FALD (full-array local dimming) systems found on high-end LCD TVs, such as the Samsung Q9FN.

This means white surgical gowns are brighter, water has an extra glisten, and details in darker scenes are more obvious on the Samsungs than this (or any) LG. When ‘The Shimmer’ erupts into a fireball, filling the screen, you can appreciate the Samsungs’ peak intensity over the LG, too.

C8 to W8 all use LG's new custom-built Alpha 9 picture processor, while the B8 sets have to make do with a new version of LG's Alpha 7 processor from 2017. That audio-funneling stand results in a better-projected and more direct presentation, but tonally it’s quite a thin delivery. LG is again differentiating its OLEDs largely on sound quality, so it’s perhaps inevitable the C8, the nearly-entry-level model, would have only mediocre sound. There’s also a very useful Recommendations service that can be accessed by moving the Magic remote cursor to the right-hand side of the screen. This monitors your viewing habits and makes recommendations based on a predictive algorithm. There are a number of picture modes to choose from but Technicolor and ISF deliver highly accurate images with natural colors, accurate whites and any unnecessary processing turned off. For those who prefer their TV picture with a bit more punch, the Standard mode results in images that are bright, vibrant and detailed, thanks to some excellent processing.
