About this deal

We start with rather a pale pour, almost straw-hued yellow (remember the joint was very dark, so the pic isn't completely fair about this: the scotch looks much darker, but that's an illusion.) This for me had the potential to be a really cool whisky, especially with the salt, however sadly the salt dominates every aspect of this whisky. On the nose: There is an initial puff of wax that fades immediately and turns into caramel sauce and bubble gum. A very brief dash of smoke. Tulip petals, dry oats, paprika, and almost a sense of creaminess. Overall, it’s balanced, doesn’t have much complexity, and consistently comes across as delicate. The sea air commences a finish that is both long and pleasant. A release of smoke hits the palate, followed by the merest hint of liquourice. The fruits, having been pushed to one side, make their return once the smoke has bowed off the stage, leaving the mouth with sweet sensations abounding. Available in a lot of pubs in the UK as a member of Diageo's 'Classic Malts' range I thought I would try a bottle of Oban. With only two small stills, traditional worm tubs and very little room to expand due to its position in the centre of town production is quite limited despite its apparent popularity, leading to q fairly high price in the UK for a standard bottling.

Citrus tingle lasts just a tad longer. Nose: Burning bonfire smoke fades away bringing some medicinal notes and fermented fruits. There's also something very pointy and repulsive, like drying paint. Finish: Rather short, but that’s not a bad thing for this scotch. Again the salt comes into play and it’s rather dry, as you would expect. I think if the finish were much longer the salt would dominate the flavor profile. Overall, I really love the balance between the salty and sweet.Oban 14 YO is one of those whiskies we've talked about as a malt forward whisky here at Connosr. I suppose one could call it 'barley at the fore' as well, given that the barley is central in all things Oban. I’ve never been overly impressed with Oban 14. It’s always been one of those malts that I get when it’s cheap at a bar, over at a friend’s place or have an after-work-dram with folks in the office because someone always seems to have a bottle, but I’ve never reviewed it… till now. This is one of my original favorite single malts from when I first moved from bourbon/rye whiskies into scotch. Part of that may also have to do with me buying this particular bottle to keep me and a friend occupied on the night of his soon-to-be wife bachelorette party. I had tasted it several times before and had been looking for an excuse to buy. I'm now finishing the last 1/3 of the bottle.

There are no surprises with this scotch. For the most part, what you smell... is what you taste... is how it finishes. The flavors and aromas from this scotch remind me of my favorite dessert and tropical fruits. It puts off some heat, but is not particularly smokey. Somewhat similar results come from drinking out of a snifter vs. drinking from a scotch tumbler. Very smooth, sweet, and easy to drink... Oban is a Western Highland Scotch distillery and brand owned by Diageo. Founded in 1794 at Argyll, the distillery was initially operated as a brewery but began distillation shortly after. Like many of Scotland’s distilleries, ownership changed multiple times, and the distillery was modernized, too. Today, Oban is said to be the second smallest distillery owned by Diageo when it comes to production capacity, at 870,000 liters per year. Nose: Gentle fruits followed by a bit of sea salt and some oakiness. A touch of smoke creeps in as well.The Oban 14-year-old is the distillery’s flagship expression.
