About this deal

Memory and storage expansion wise, both can support up to 64GB of dual channel DDR4 memory across two SO-DIMM slots. However, the B550 has two M.2 slots supporting 2280 SSDs while the NUC has 4 M.2 slots. But the computer also has a modular design that allows you put the mini PC inside an external case to connect an external graphics card, and additional storage, among other things.

This works because the B550 Pro mini PC itself has a PCIe 3.0 x16 connector on the bottom of the computer. Place the system inside the external case and that connector attaches to the PCIe 3.0 interface in the case, allowing you to plug a graphics card. The Minisforum Elitemini B550 mini PC provides high end performance with the option to attach an eGPU to the unique frame design for even faster gaming performance. Measuring only 7.4 x 6.5 x 2.6 inches (15.8 x 16.65 x 6.7 cm) and weighing 1129 grams, the Minisforum Elitemini B550 mini PC takes up minimal space on your desktop and is also very portable for travelling between office meetings or longer term travel. The external case measures 320 x 170 x 160mm (12.6″ x 6.7″ x 6.3″) and has both a PCIe 3.0 x16 connector for a graphics card and a PCIe x4 connector that can be used to add an extra SSD to the computer. In principle, this solution works well. At the same time it does have the air of an expedient stopgap measure to boost graphic performance.

Performance of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 in conjunction with the Miniforum EliteMini B550 is at about the same level as one of our test systems built on an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X. Differences due to any limitations of the graphics card are barely noticeable at higher resolution levels. The higher IPC of the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X versus the AMD Ryzen 7 5700G is only apparent at lower resolution levels. We tested the same graphics card in an eGPU case connected via Thunderbolt and found that performance was 25 percent higher than on a Minsiforum EliteMini TH50. By giving two options, this solution is somewhat a hybrid between a Mini-PC and a typical desktop system. It can either be powered by bundled 19V power supply if the discrete GPU is not attached or alternatively powered by ATX or SFX (12V) power supply. Users can therefore choose between buying, for instance, Ryzen 5 5600G and Ryzen 5 5600X, however, the latter option will require a discrete GPU. Minisforum is attracting increased attention, both in Germany and around the globe. Their portfolio already includes a wide range of Mini PCs for everyday office use. A compact gaming PC was previously available with the Minisforum EliteMini HX90. That model, however, didn't have a dedicated graphics processor.
