About this deal

The Lenovo also did a better job at color production than the Asus in all three color gamuts we tested for: sRGB, Adobe RGB and DCI-P3. The biggest difference was in the sRGB color gamut, where the Lenovo hit 98% coverage and the Asus only reached about two-thirds of that (66.4%). This allows for two modes of use. You can display video and other content over the USB connection from a laptop with a compatible USB-C port, and simultaneously power the M14 from the laptop through the same USB-C connection. Alternately, you can plug an optional 65-watt AC power adapter into one of the M14's USB-C ports to power the monitor; this will let you also charge the laptop when it is connected to the M14's other USB-C port. The design here is also the best on the market. The riser is smart, and the adjustable hinge is precisely what this category needed to make it feel more natural. The extra Type-C port is welcomed as well.

It’s also hard to worry about a 1.6in difference when the M14 is so far ahead on picture quality. This is best demonstrated by its incredible colour accuracy: we measured an average Delta E of just 1.3, on par with professional-grade desktop monitors and drastically superior to the I1601FWUX’s dreadful 6.5.

If you own one of the many laptops now on the market with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and you want to pair it with a portable monitor, you can't do better than the Lenovo ThinkVision M14d. It will match your notebook's screen, letting you take full advantage of the extra vertical space that the taller ratio brings. Of course, you can use the display with a 16:9 laptop as well, though you'll either get a little blank space above and below the image or a slightly mismatched (or possibly stretched) view. In the chromaticity chart below, the area within the triangle represents the sRGB color space, and my data points (the circles) are for the most part evenly placed around it, with the purple and red points indicating a slight expansion of the gamut in those areas...

In my well-lit office and with the whole display turned perpendicularly toward me, I could still see my favorite hobbits without interfering glare. This means sharing the screen with a couple of people, perhaps for a presentation, is certainly possible. With the monitor almost flat, it seemed a touch less bright but, as expected, but the movie was still watchable. You can connect the M14d to a laptop using either the right- or left-side USB-C port, depending on which side of the laptop you want to put the display. You can even connect to an Android smartphone if it has a USB-C port. The ports support both DisplayPort over USB Alternate Mode and USB power delivery, letting you power or charge a laptop connected to the monitor with the latter plugged into a wall outlet.

The Design: Squaring Things Away

If you’re a gamer, you’ll most likely be in the market for a DisplayPort monitor as DP cables are generally preferred by gamers due to their greater bandwidth and ability to take advantage of top graphics card software. The included case and cover is also super light (114 grams or 4 ounces), and it looks great, but an added pouch for the cable would have been valuable. Select models are designed with AMD FreeSync or NVIDIA G-Sync technology to work more seamlessly with your favorite brands of graphics cards. What’s more, select models with 1ms response times minimize stuttering and input lag for a silky smooth gaming experience. With its long USB-C cable, I wish there was some form of cable management. You won’t be able to tweak its display much beyond brightness or use different display profiles, like you can with the Asus ZenScreen MB16AC, and, unlike the larger and barely heavier Viotek LinQ P16C, there are no speakers. Plus, if you plan to take this on the go often, as is intended, you’ll almost certainly want to buy a replacement carrying case to replace the flimsy one Lenovo includes. Also, the display only works with USB-C (DisplayPort 1.2 over Alt mode); there’s no DisplayLink tech, so some laptops won’t support it. Many monitor manufacturers, including Lenovo, also still offer VGA displays. VGA is a more dated method of connecting your PC and visuals but there are still plenty of PCs around that may require this input method.
