About this deal

Holding the nipple shield facing towards you, with your thumbs either side of the teat, bend the rim of the shield as if you were going to turn it inside out, but stop halfway. And you never know, you might just forget to take the nipple shield with you one day when you go out, and you and your baby will just figure out how to nurse without it!

While nipple shields are not the answer for every breastfeeding dyad, the truth is that they are not all good nor not all bad. Silicone is a great material for a nipple shield as it’s water-resistant and flexible, allowing the shield to fit perfectly and comfortably. It’s also more durable, so the shield should last throughout your breastfeeding journey. And, when compared to a material like plastic, it’s more eco-friendly, too. Express some milk into the tip, or drip expressed milk onto the outside of the nipple shield to encourage your baby to latch on. Some issues, such as sore nipples from a poor latch, can be resolved without a shield. But there are several reasons why a breastfeeding mom may need to use a nipple shield: You have inverted nipplesPut your nipple into that dimple. Then, stretch the silicone base of the nipple shield over your breast. Moms also like that these shields come in a case you can pop in the microwave to sterilize rather than washing and drying the shields each time you use them. Nipple shields imported from Germany can help with latching difficulties more effectively than the traditional shapes available. The smallest size of these shields fits nipples up 20mm, so if your nipples are smaller across rather than shorter, Medela's small shields might fit better. It takes more effort to get milk through a nipple shield, so your baby may need some extra help. One way to do this is to gently compress different areas of your breast during nursing sessions.

There is slightly less milk transfer. You could develop mastitis more easily because your baby isn’t fully emptying your breast each feeding. This could also lead to a low milk supply. No one shape, texture, or rigidity works best for every baby. It can take some trial & error to find a shield that works well. (Again, something we excel in!) It's recommended that you use nipple shields only under the guidance of an IBCLC who can help you find the shield that works best for your baby, resolve the challenges, and provide advice & oversight when ditching the shield. IBCLC care is critical in cases where weight gain or milk supply issues are a concern or when babies continue to cough, choke or gag with the shield.Once your nipple can be drawn into the baby’s mouth correctly and the baby can breastfeed effectively, you should be able to discontinue pumping and breastfeed without discomfort. Roll the rim of the nipple shield down over the breast and press firmly onto the breast. Keep the holes in the teat covered while you do this, as it creates suction and will draw the nipple up into the teat. Deep latching, breast compression, and frequent feeding will help, but make sure to monitor your baby’s weight to make sure they are getting enough. This nursing bra is the absolute BEST for breastfeeding at night. It’s super comfortable and made of the softest material ever. You’ll want to wear it forever to sleep in, even after you’re done breastfeeding. We spoke with one mom on the BabyCenter editorial team who used nipple shields while breastfeeding.
