About this deal

I fitted the clinchers to a pair ofPrime Carbon RR38 disc wheels, and unfortunately the process was accompanied by thumb skimming and swearing. I rode seated for the entire climb, with my hands on the brake hoods and held as consistent a body position as possible throughout each run. If you're interested in how the 23, 25, 28, and 32 mm Grand Prix 5000 compare to each other, you can read our Grand Prix 5000 23, 25, 28, 32 Comparison special article.

Continental says the AS TR is the "strongest ever Grand Prix 5000 tyre," thanks to an improved tread pattern, multi-layer overlapping ply construction, and increased sidewall protection. The result, Conti says, is an increase in wet-weather grip, more puncture protection and better durability than any other GP5000 it has made. That it has lost some weight, is now compatible with hookless rims and comes with a transparent/ tan sidewall option, are reasons enough to celebrate. Continental Grand Prix 5000 S TR installation From data of several other worn samples of the Grand Prix 5000 that were sent in by readers, it seems highly likely that rolling resistance will go down again from this point for at least the rear 32-622 Grand Prix 5000 that shows decent wear. The front 28-622 just doesn't wear at all with the type of riding we do, and we're unsure how this affects the future results. Our lab testing took place at the Silverstone Sports Engineering Hub, where we used its bicycle-specific rolling resistance rig to determine how efficient each tyre is. All else being equal, a tyre which produces less rolling resistance will enable you to ride faster for the same effort.Wear rate of the GP 5000 looks to be very low and puncture resistance also looks to be good as we had 0 flats in the first 620 miles / 1000 km. Continental also claims puncture resistance has increased by 20%. Unfortunately, our tests indicate that puncture resistance of the GP 5000 has gone down when compared to the GP 4000. In both the tread and sidewall puncture tests, the GP 5000 scores 1 point less and comes in at a tread puncture score of 10 points and a sidewall puncture score of 4 points.

It’s worth noting, however, the marginally larger size of the GP5000 TL (1.38 per cent at 90psi / 6.2bar) means the casing tension at equal tyre pressures would have been correspondingly higher compared to the GP5000 S TR. Lighter, Faster and with stronger sidewalls... The new standard in road tubeless ready technology - now compatible with hookless rims. For the first time ever, it has embedded what it called 'Active Comfort Technology'. This sits below the Vectran Breaker, and apparently without affecting rolling resistance, dampens buzz and vibration.

We've already done a test with a pair of worn Grand Prix 4000S II that was sent in by a reader who used them for 5000 miles / 8000 km. Because we received a lot of comments about Inflated to 65psi / 4.48bar, the GP5000 S TR measures 28.4mm on the Hunt 54 Aerodynamicist wheelset (which has a 20mm internal rim width), whereas a GP5000 TL measures 28.6mm on the same wheels, at the same pressure.
