About this deal

In addition to continuous light, the UL60 also supports a few special effects including flash, storm, television and broken bulb. These effects strobe and animate the light, but without changing its color. Is 60 watts enough? The Godox SL-60 completely surpassed my expectations. In the past, I have used rectangular LED panels, but this time I needed a light that would work with traditional light modifiers such as softboxes and reflectors. With the SL-60 being a COB light, it has a much more traditional design that will be familiar to photographers. The standard Bowens mount on the front gives you access to an incredible range of 3rd party modifiers.

I cranked the UL60 up to maximum, 100% brightness, then progressively moved further away from the light until my skin tone hit 55% IRE on the monitor’s waveform. (FYI, 55% is what works best for me and my skin tone when exposing C-Log). In this test, I was able to stand ten feet away before my skin tone dropped below 55%. The card can not be activated with batteries, flashtubes, cables or consumables. The list is non-exhaustive and is subject to change without prior notice The UL60 also comes with an external power control. This piece of hardware modifies brightness, modes, groups, and powers the light on and off without touching the light. This is especially helpful when the light is boomed high overhead and not easily reachable. Godox UL60: Power controllerDespite having years of experience with flash, I get that it takes time to learn. You’re effectively guessing what the light will look like, every time. With continuous light, there is no guessing. You turn it on and modify it as you see fit. Every change you make is there before your eyes. You can immediately see if it’s bright enough, and whether or not moving the light will improve the shot. I would count this as a good performance, largely delivered by what is a very nice reflector. Comparing it to photographic reflectors that I have in my office from much bigger flash brands, it looked identical an almost every way. That said, I doubt most people will use it with a reflector. One of the big benefits of a COB light is that the form factor allows you to tap into the vast array of studio light modifiers that are on the market. I would definitely recommend that you pair this light with some sort of softbox or at the very least a shoot-through umbrella. There’s a lot to like with the Godox UL60, but it does have a few shortcomings. No padded carrying case Godox UL60: Only comes with a box, no carrying case The Godox Light mobile app generally works fine with the UL60, though I did experience some occasional Bluetooth dropouts that caused the light and app to lose their handshake. Additionally, the Godox Light app is not compatible (at least at the time of this review) with other, not-so-old Godox LED lights including the VL150. Perhaps Godox is going through a transitionary phase with their lights and mobile apps right now, but I was disappointed that I could not control both the UL60 and VL150 using the same app. Final thoughts

Godox SL-60W COB LED Continuous Light. Studio Lighting Equipment Godox SL-60W COB LED Continuous Light Speaking of light modifiers, I might have found the perfect pairing for the SL-60. It’s called the Lantern Softbox and it’s made by Aputure. This softbox has some directionality to it, but it also has a lot of spill around the edges from the globe shape that helps to spread light around a wider area. It’s a fantastic solution if you only have one light, but you want to light a relatively large part of a room with a nice soft look. Here’s a sample photo taken beneath the Lantern using the Godox SL-60. Note how much light has wrapped around onto my hand behind the camera when using this awesome Lantern modifier. But let’s get some real world numbers to test 60 watts of brightness in a key light. To test this out, I recorded video with the following setup (what I typically for videos on my channel). This change of mind return policy is in addition to, and does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law including any rights you may have in respect of faulty items. To return faulty items see our Returning Faulty Items policy.Of course, I’m testing the SL-60 light here, the cheapest of the Godox COB range. But the light is also available in three additional variations with more power: SL-100, SL-150 and SL-200. The design of the more powerful lights is nearly identical, but each one gets a little longer to accommodate a larger power supply and more cooling. If you get to the end of this review and like the look of the product, but wish it was more powerful, you have those options. BOWENS S MOUNT: The SL-60W is a Bowens Fit light meaning that it will work perfectly with all Bowens fit modifiers, including softboxes and beauty dishes. This means that compared to flash shooting, you will have to use a much slower shutter speed and that can present problems with subject movement. A relatively weak LED such as the SL-60 would be fine for shooting static subjects such as food or other still life projects, but even then you are going to need to use a tripod if you need to stop down the lens to get a reasonable depth of field. As the LED lamp is a combined controller chip and LED, it means the light has a high CRI, translating to accurate and consistent color in use. Rated at 5600k ±300, this is daylight balanced, which matches your midday light and any flashes you may have. The 60W COB LED offers a high output along with color-accurate rendering and dimming control from 10-100%.

To test the same setup with a non-prime lens, I stopped-down the aperture to f/2.5, and this time I was able to stand seven feet away at 55% IRE.The power controller may be powered through a standard wall outlet or by attaching a v-mount battery (sold separately). There’s also a DMX512 input for connecting the light to a professional lighting board. You may be considering this light for food or product photography, so here’s how you can change the look of the light to get a variety of photo options. There are a few ways of getting modifiers onto the light. The most basic is the umbrella slot in the stand mount, coupled with the standard reflector. You can use either bounce or shoot-through umbrellas for this. Godox is not responsible for financial losses and other civil law consequences caused by a defect in the advertised device (loss of profit, turnover, inability to conduct business). As for wattage, this is a 60 watt light. 60 watts is decent wattage for use in simple, three point lighting setups where the light is pointed at a subject. 60 watts may not be enough wattage though for more creative lighting scenarios — typically used in filmmaking — where lights are placed at a distance and heavily diffused for softer light.

NOT Included RC-A5 remote control offers wireless dimming control as well as the ability to work with six lighting groups and 16 channels. This 433 MHz remote runs on three separate AAA batteries and has a wireless range of approximately 65.6′. I had originally planned for the light to be a simple, cheap stop-gap in my studio until I could assign the budget for a larger light from a bigger brand. Honestly, I don’t think I need to do that anymore, I’m perfectly happy with the Godox light and it more than meets my needs as a key light for some Youtube videos. If the subject is closer, simply turn the brightness down. If the subject is farther away, then you would most likely need a higher wattage light to achieve proper exposure. While taking the look of a monobloc, the Godox SL60W is actually smaller than a typical studio flash head. It still weighs in at a hefty 1.6kg. First impressions of this light in the box were that it was a little smaller than I expected and that although it looked plastic, it looked well made.watts is on the low end of the power spectrum for a COB light, but for indoor video shooting where the light is being positioned just off-camera, it’s plenty of power. Stills photographers who require much faster shutter speeds than filmmakers will want to consider a higher power version of the light such as the SL-150. That is unless you are only photographing still life subjects while using a tripod and longer shutter speeds. The Godox SL-60W is a white 60W COB LED continuous light. The SL-60W is a daylight-balanced video light with an intuitive design. The SL-60W is a Bowens Fit light and so is compatible with all Bowens fit modifiers. With an intuitive overheating prevention system, the SL-60W is protected against overheating whilst in use. Integrated heatsink, built-in fan, and temperature control function help keep the light running cool for safe and consistent use. The temperature of the fixture itself can also be monitored, in Fahrenheit or Celsius, on the rear LCD. This change of mind return policy is in addition to, and does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law including any rights you may have in respect of faulty items. The construction and design of the UL60 is much nicer than the 60W. The fit and finish of everything is tighter and more professional looking. Godox has been investing more in their product design since the 60W, which you can see in all the hardware that comes with this light.
