In the mouth: The palate is similarly gently understated, feeling a bit thin at points. Sumptuous fruit to start, again with very ripe red apples. This turns quite juicy for a split second at midpalate before evolving a dirty, musty, slightly stagnant or tired woodiness. This has an aftertaste of salted nuts, more rich fudge flavors, a stale ashiness, and a slightly soapy texture. Conclusion My mind immediately went to Speyside, specifically to sherried malts. I personally enjoy this flavor profile. More importantly, I find it appeals to the palate of the casual Scotch drinker, someone for whom a glass of whisky is an occasional indulgence rather than an everyday treat. Speaking in broad generic terms, the fruity and nutty richness corresponds to what people think of when they think of “good whisky.” All of these are so much more layered, textured, and variegated than anything coming out of Macallan these days. Each one is an overachiever for the age and price, with the 21 year old being the best value for money among the three. They’re sherried, but not sherry bombs given the relatively low bottling strength. The subtlety works in their favor, allowing some novel nuances to come to the fore. One of Glenfarclas' distinguishing features is its affinity for sherry casks. The distillery predominantly uses Oloroso sherry casks sourced from Jerez, Spain, to mature its whiskies. This choice imparts a unique sweetness and a medley of dried fruit flavours. Creating a signature profile that whisky enthusiasts recognise and adore. The finish is long and sweet. Heavy sherry here too which I have to say by this point I am not surprised to find. I am however surprised at how long it leaves my tongue tingling.

Call it oddly compelling in a malty zen-like way. I have not tasted them side by side so I can't say for sure, but my memories from last winter of the 21 are hauntingly compelling. It just seemed more metaphysically "deep" whereas the 25 was moving in the direction of sherry intensity in a more commonly "scotchy" way. This said, it was much more "grown up" way than Aberlour A'bunadh, for instance, which is understandable because of the age difference. The 21 still has my allegiance, and I can't quite explain why. What sets Glenfarclas apart is its status as one of the few remaining family-owned distilleries in Scotland. This dedication is palpable in every drop of Glenfarclas whisky. Energetic, heady, rich. Wakes up the palate and demands to be heard. The marshmallow note is uncanny and overpowers the rest of the dram at points, but overall this regains its footing, albeit with a somewhat abbreviated finish. All in, a step up from the 12 year old expression and solid value for money. Score: 7/10 Sherry, sherry, sherry... but despite all this sweetness up front the nose can only be described as gentle. The nose is certainly powerful, I can sit it on the table in front of me more than a yard away and within a minute I will start getting tantalising wafts! But for all it's strength, it's not overwhelming at all. Really complex, full of nuts, honey, citrus, sherry smoke, a hint of fruitcake overlying a constant note of peat. Superbly balanced. So good I am hesitant to taste it as it can't possibly taste as good as it smells! Bottle's been open for just over three months and it's down to the top of the label. Review is neat but sat for 30+ minutes. On the nose: Candied nuts, lime juice, zucchini bread, roasted marshmallows, green grapes, whole cloves, and a gently smoky-woody note that tips into a green astringency. Palate: Entrance of toffee and raw almond-- though a bit muted or stale (steamed white rice or the smell of coffee grounds). Some very dark cocoa becomes more apparent throughout the experience. (This cocoa gives the usual sophisticated bitterness, but the bitterness is lessened if given the chance to oxidize, developing some caramel.) Not much fruit here, but maybe thin strawberry juice if you had to point to one.P: A bombastic yet sophisticated barrage of caramel, oak, vanilla, mint. The palate changes in a chimerical way, unfolding, teasing, growing, fading, changing, fading. Upon pouring the deep golden liquid of Glenfarclas 25 into my copita, I was hit with wonderful aromas of sherry and oak which told me this was going to be heavily Sherried. The nose is very floral but sophisticated with complex but gentle notes of sherry, dark chocolate, oak, orange marmalade, and some hints of nuts. The palate is slightly smoky accompanied by coffee notes that arise with continuing hints of nuts, dark chocolate, oak, sherry, and leather. The finish is long and intense but still warm and welcoming with notes of cherry, cocoa, leather and oak. Taste - Fruity and sour arrival with strawberry and raspberry and more of that 'young' note. Develops into bitter chocolate and oak.
