About this deal

Esbit and Wood Burning Stoves: I have a love hate relationship with esbit cube and woodburning stoves. They’re use ridiculously simple designs so they’re lightweight and you can find tinder/kindling anywhere, but it’s dirty and takes forever to cook. You have to wait for the fire to heat up, esbit cubes smell funk and leaves a greasy film on the bottom of your pot. If you’re on a budget esbit stoves are the way to go. Esbit cubes are cheap and you can make a cheap/reliable esbit stove by cutting down a wide tin can (peaches, pears, pineapple, etc.) and a scrap of wire mesh. It’s such a foolproof simple design that you can’t screw it up. Diesel: If you’re traveling in third world countries, diesel might be your only option. It burns dirty and smells, but it’s better than gasoline. You’ll have to clean out fuel lines, but it shouldn’t damage the stove.

It’s because white gas is by far the purest fuel source so it reduces the amount of maintenance required for your camping gear. White gas is easy to light, works everywhere, and it has unparalleled purity so you’ll rarely have to clean clogged fuel lines. Kerosene’s a close alternative, but it smells and you’ll have to clean out your fuel lines more frequently. White gas, also called petroleum naphtha, is the generic name for Coleman fuel. It also refers to a few other types of gases (including pure gasoline). That 32oz container is really convenient on short camping trips, but boy is it expensive. You can save some cash by purchasing one of the following alternatives to Coleman Fuel. They will all burn, but some fuels are cleaner and more efficient than others. When I said the generator gets a clean, I meant I gave it a good wipe. I dont take it apart or anything like that, just give it a good wipe with soap and water. The recommended fuel type for Coleman lantern is Coleman fuel. However, there are other types of fuels available. But, first, you must know why it is recommended. Reasons Why People Prefer Coleman Fuel Typically, you need to use a built-in pump to create pressure, which will eventually force the gas through the fuel line so that you can use your kit. Propane Cylinders Expiration Honestly, the cheaper fuel burns almost exactly the same, and both of them are safe for your appliances. Despite the subtle differences, you’d probably be okay with the cheapest option.

Other Fuel Types: All non-toxic flammable liquids can be used in a camping stove. Some are better than others, but as long as the fuel is easy to light it will work in a pinch. You probably won’t save any money burning biodiesel, paint thinner, etc. To make this list I considered the price, availability, ease of use, maintenance, and effect on your stove/lantern. Some products that work great initially will eventually clog/damage fuel lines and eat away at the stove. As much as Coleman fuel is one of the most commonly used sources of fuel, especially for camping and adventure, sometimes you may not be in a position to get it. Always make sure you learn how to use alternative gases. What do you do? Which is the closest alternative use? Here are the Most Common Substitutes #1. Unleaded Gasoline Coleman Fuel is a branded white gas, which is a mixture of different fuel types used for camping stoves. One of the biggest advantages of using kerosene as fuel is its availability in the market. Kerosene is easily available and accessible to consumers. This makes it a good option for you if you need an easily available fuel for your camping trip.

However, it is vital to take precautions when using gasoline, make sure that you do not spill any and ensure the parts of your lanterns are well sealed as required. Generic White Gas: Generic white gas is by far the best substitute for name-brand Coleman fuel. It’s usually a few dollars cheaper and basically the same thing minus a few additives. It burns clean and there’s no risk of damaging your camping stove or lantern. Kerosine: Kerosine is the second-best alternative to Coleman fuel. It’s easy to find and way cheaper. The only downside is that it’s dirtier than white gas, but way cleaner than diesel and gasoline. If white gas isn’t easier to find kerosine is a great subsititute. Just plan on cleaning your stoves fuel lines frequently. Kerosene is a mixture of petroleum hydrocarbons. The chemical composition will depend on where it is coming from, though typically it will be made of 10 different hydrocarbons, each of which have 10-16 carbon atoms per molecule. Its high flash points makes it reasonably safe to store and use. How Fast does Kerosene Evaporate? You shouldn’t put any gas canister or fuel bottles in household recycling, but you can sometimes recycle them at a center. Can I use Coleman Fuel with my Jet Boil or MSR?Also its a lot easier to carry a petrol can than a big gas bottle everywhere too. Refill your can at any petrol station. Some of the pros you will get from using this type of fuel as a substitute is that it produces a cleaner burn when compared to other gases. Aspen4T, and to a lesser degree Coleman fuel is a a much purer white petrol, free of these nasties; Coleman fuel has a green dye added. Unlike the other options on this list, it’s really hard to light and control. You’ll have to deal with flare-ups and problems in cold weather. Another benefit is availability. You can find kerosene in most of the stores and can use it for your kerosene lantern.

The tradeoff for the extra work is a significant price savings between the cost of kerosene and Coleman fuel. Making Coleman Fuel at Home As I mentioned above, there are a few downsides to white gas, but the benefits more than make up for them. It’s mainly an issue with liquid fuels in general. Liquid fuels require priming and pumping your stove to get fuel through the fuel lines. You need to pump the stove to put the fuel under enough pressure to light and prime the stove so fuel vapors can be ignited. The entire pumping and priming process takes less than a minute so it’s not a big deal, but worth noting. Kerosene Is A Close Alternative To Coleman Fuel aka White Gas So what else can you use? Your best bet will almost always be kerosene. It’s inexpensive and can be found just about anywhere, but it does have a few downsides. It’s dirty, smelly, and harder to light, but it works well once you figure it out.

What is Coleman Fuel Made Out Of And Why Is It Better Than Other Camping Fuels?

When choosing a substitute for Coleman fuel you need to consider fuel price, ease of use and ongoing maintenance. Coleman fuel is seriously expensive compared to some of the other options. So what’s the best Coleman Fuel substitute? These additives are great in theory, but not worth the added price. With that being said, I carry 2-3 small 32oz bottles of Coleman fuel in the trunk of my car just in case.
