Tapeworms again are large and visible to the naked eye. They create very small lesions at point of attachment to the gut wall. Thoughts seem to range between worming your bird every 6 weeks to never doing it at all. And in certain circumstances, both of those protocols can be correct, but lots of factors need to be considered to determine the right protocol for your bird. So, you should consult with an avian vet to determine the best worming protocol for your bird’s individual circumstances. The water soluble product contains levamisole and is ideal for dissolving in drinking water to treat aviary birds, or birds which it is too difficult or stressful to catch. Dilute the product as directed on the label and provide the medicated drinking water for 24 hours. This should be repeated at least twice a year for birds prone to round worms (such as Australian parakeets). Prevention. Although periodic deworming is indispensable for a bird’s health, prevention is always the best solution.

Roundworms (Ascaridia compar) are generally less pathogenic but there can be clinical signs of loss of condition, poor growth, listlessness, diarrhoea and wasting, mainly in young birds (Figure 2). Concrete floors offer the advantage of been easily cleaned, and birds housed this way may only need worming two or three times each year. Pavers are a near substitute, but the joins between pavers can offer refuge to insects and provide a suitable environment for worm eggs to survive. Praziquantel; effective against tapeworm but extremely bitter to the taste. This approved veterinary preparation contains levamisole – a well established treatment for roundworm. Ivermectins – ivermectin (e.g. Ivomec®) and moxidectin (e.g. Cydectin®); these are effective against roundworm and gizzard worm only. Birds must weigh at least 12.5g before being treated with Beaphar Bird Wormer. Repeat in 14 days with fresh solution, or as directed by a veterinary surgeon. This provides a dose of 40mg/kg bodyweight based on an average bodyweight of 30g and consumption of 5mL/day. In summer the dose should be reduced to account for increased water consumption, which may be double or more. Drinking water dose: Dilute Wormout Gel with water at recommended dose rate and provide this as the sole source of water for 2 days. Repeat once every 3 months.
