This tolerance of freshwater is made possible by many remarkable physiologic adaptations; notably special glands and kidney functionsthat help their bodies retain salt while they remain in freshwater for extended periods. On the east coast of the United States, they can be found from the Chesapeake Bay south through the Gulf of Mexico and further southward to southern Brazil.
