About this deal

New additions and features are constantly being developed with the goal to provide filmmakers with their ideal video monitor. AtmosOS continues to be updated with more ProRes RAW capable cameras, along with other features. For example, the inclusion of a wider range of frame guides and the nine-grid overlay makes composing and creating social media content straightforward. The team at Atmos continue to make innovations and improvements to their firmware.

Tap the setting ICON, and you can set-up your recording options. It’s worth pointing out here that the Ninja V doesn’t update your cameras recording settings, so if your camera is set to 1080p, then that is the resolution that will feed through to the Ninja V. Atomos RemoteView lets you share what’s on your Atomos screen with other Atomos monitors, as well as with iPads, Macs and Apple TVs wirelessly. You can monitor what’s happening on-set and look through any connected camera taking the shot, from anywhere in the world. At the bottom of the Ninja V is the AtomXpand port which is partly hidden under the battery compartment. This accepts a whole range of Atomos expansion modules and supports up to 4K 60p and 12-channels digital 24-bit 96KHz audio. The first modules to be released are the AtomX Sync and AtomX SDI.What is the budget for your production? If it is a very small budget project, you may not have the scope for a lengthy post production process that includes editing, grading or effects. In this case H.265 may be well suited to your project, as when recording in either Rec.709 or Log with a LUT ‘baked in’, the files are unlikely to require color grading.

Arguably one of the first and most important accessories for any video shooter has to be a decent monitor. Sure, the articulated or flip monitor on your camera may well do the job, but it still can’t match the function and features of a dedicated device such as the Atomos Ninja V. A point worth highlighting is that if you’re coming to the Ninja V thinking that it will give your camera a huge video quality boost it won’t. If you record from an 8-bit camera, then the footage you’re shooting will be 8-bit, if your camera is limited to 4K 30fps, that will still be the maximum you can record at. So now for the VERY IMPORTANT TIP. I found this out the hard way so hopefully this will help others to not make the same mistake I did.The less than ideal form factor and handling of interchangeable lens cameras (ILC) have led many manufacturers to design handy and innovative solutions for video; from housings, mics, handles, and of course, monitors.

Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. Read our editorial mission & see how we test. Some things to note however. In comparison to the monitor-only Shinobi, this thing is pretty heavy. And since it’s doing more work than the Shinobi, having extra and/or larger batteries in comparison will be key. But keep in mind that by the time you have all that, you’ll have a pretty heavy piece of kit on your camera. I tried this for a session with my RS3 gimbal and I got a pretty solid workout chasing after talent. The unit also heated up quite a bit in my environment so the fan noise was noticeable. However since we were booming audio this wasn’t an issue.

DSLR and Mirrorless cameras may well be the popular choice for shooting video, but, there’s no getting away from the fact that they were originally designed to shoot stills.

First let me say that this is an amazing product! I have NO regrets investing in the Ninja V, it has put my Sony A7iii on steroids. Not only that but my work flow is so much better. I'm usually a gorilla style type of shooter so if you know, it is very important to be in complete focus and to be able to know what's going on when you're running and gunning. I haven't even tapped into all of the features yet but am excited to do so!You’ll need an SSD card reader to plug the SSD into your computer, the right HDMI cable for your camera, and some way of attaching the Ninja V to it via a tiltable clamping device. This could be a cold shoe-mounted accessory or one that bolts to a camera rig. To use it on location, you’ll also need at least a couple of Sony NP-F batteries and a charger. And the Atomos sunhood makes sense, too.
