After more than 10 years of doing this, I’m starting to run out of new whiskies to try. New single malt distilleries, I mean… there’s an unending deluge of new expressions from existing distilleries. Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. We shall first try to settle any dispute over a dram of whisky. Finish: strong finish, with the peat and citrus becoming stronger still with time. Rich and resonant Enter Aberfeldy, which is essentially synonymous with Dewar’s Blended Scotch. The two are owned by the same company, and nearly all of Aberfeldy’s single malt production goes into making Dewar’s. I kinda like Dewar’s, and I liked the idea of drinking a concentrated, undiluted-by-grain-whisky version of it. It has a 12 year age statement, too, which is not a guarantee but a reassurance. The Service has been prepared by us solely for information purposes to Members and the Service is based on information we consider reliable and we obtain the contents of the Service from a number of different third party sources (including Contributions), but we do not endorse, support, represent, warrant or guarantee the completeness, truthfulness, accuracy, or reliability of the Services and any information therein. The palate is medium-bodied, creamy and just a bit spicy. There are more vanilla flavours, followed by honey and some grassy notes.

Butterscotch and a complex overripe fruit jump out of the glass followed by notes of malt, vanilla and hints of sweet white grapes. Some grassy notes hang about with some honey and a sweetness that reminds me of the Playdough / Superman ice-cream I loved as a kid. A nice nose indeed.I can enjoy lemon citrus balanced with other flavours, as expressed here in the oxidised Aberfeldy 12. If lemon citrus is front and center without other strong balancing flavours, I find it just distracting and annoying. Oxidation allowed my bottle of Aberfeldy 12 to become sweeter, rounder, and richer. Palate: Marzipan, a touch of coconut, dried cherries and cherry pit spice, medium viscosity, some bakers chocolate, firm tannins, light ethanol burn, medium length finish with toasted almond dominating. B and B-: Good and above average. The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. A B- is three stars.

Dewar’s is a pretty familiar sight in the United States, as well it should be: it’s the second-best selling Scotch Whisky brand in the country, and that country happens to be the world’s most lucrative whiskey market. Less well-known are the single malts (or grain whiskies for that matter) that go into this popular blended whisky. Dewar’s foundation is found about an hour from Dewar’s hometown of Perth, at Aberfedly. You are responsible for all activities through your account. Appearance: Oddly enough, the appearance of both the 12 year and 16 year is identical. Radiant golden straw. While its “ Exceptional Cask” releases are bottled at cask strength, the three whiskies we look at today — representing the core of Aberfeldy’s single malt lineup, all formally relaunched a few years ago — are all bottled at 80 proof. All three are aged in a combination of ex-bourbon casks, first fill oloroso sherry casks, and refill casks which are then married together before bottling — though note the additional aging on the 16 year old below. Over the years Aberfeldy hasn’t really pushed out its single malt despite being the only one of the “Last Great Malts” to actually have a regular OB. Though like many “lesser known” distilleries 3rd party bottlers (NDPs) have kept the name alive and known by bottling resting casks not marked for Dewar’s blending. Though now that Dewars is getting into the single malt game in a big way the Aberfeldy 12 will soon enjoy a wide distribution.
