About this deal

You can get a full-size low energy kettle - which we use all of the time in the van - but the pay off is that they are slow to boil. I'm no expert in voltage and wattage, but I do have an EHU cable and have got to know what I can get away with.

Most camping mains cables are supplied as either a 20 or 25 metre length and are normally coated in a waterproof hard wearing, high visibility coating. Don't forget about the RCD (Residual Current Device) which will protect you against a potentially fatal electric shock if something is to go wrong. This may be something only the campsite owner can do, which may not be possible between 9 pm and 9 am, or there could even be a charge for resetting the electrics. In the case of electrical hook ups, the second digit on the IP rating (shown in the list below) correlates to how effective the electric hook up is at being waterproof. Main Application : Used in the connection of 240 Volt electrical appliances for outdoor industrial installations that need to remain operational in extreme climatic conditions. The parts of the campsite with powered pitches (electric hook up) will have power supply bollards dotted around the area for campers to plug into. A Reverse Polarity Tester will tell you if this is the case, and a Polarity Reverse Adapter will correct it.

A generator can be used to provide a 230V supply where a hook-up is not available, but this route is not without its drawbacks and safety issues. As you can see, an average household electric kettle will draw more power than a 10A campsite supply! Although it is a little more expensive, we recommend the Outwell Mains 3-Way-Roller Kit with USB and Light. When you connect to the hook-up point, plug your cable into your unit first and then into the site’s bollard. Most modern electrical supply units will have a built in tester otherwise a proprietary mains tester can be bought for a small cost that can be plugged into a socket and will show up reverse polarity and identify other problems with earth connections. Certificated Sites and other campsites’ supplies maybe even more limiting, perhaps providing as little as 5A.

Campsite owners and management team (in the case of the Club, the Club and its Holiday Site Managers) are responsible for the safety of the electrical supply equipment up to the socket outlet on the site bollard where you connect your hook-up cable. An RCD is a much more important subject which many campsites i've visited don't have on their posts. Microwave ovens can also present problems – even though they may be advertised as (for example) 800W, the input operating power requirement, particularly on start-up, may be up to twice this. You should find a sticker somewhere on the hair straighteners that tells you the voltage (V) and either the current (A) or wattage (W or kW). I'm now eyeing up my George Foreman, phone chargers, straightners and wondering if I can take this and that, I went from just getting it to heat the tent, and keep food cool to now thinking what else can i now take lol. When setting up with a campervan, motorhome or caravan, always connect the female end of the cable to your unit first. This can be done relatively simply using sheets of acrylic cut to size, and can save masses of energy if fitted correctly.

We’ve got a wide range of power supplies and electric hook ups suitable for all purposes from charging up your mobile phone or GPS device to help you navigate your way around a national park, to everyday batteries and solar panels to help you recharge or power your torch or tent lighting for the evening. If you purchase yourself an electrical supply cable, you'll be able to receive a normal A/C electrical supply just as you would at home (tents also require a mobile mains unit). we have a 3way fridge plugged in at all times then only one high wattage appliance at a time ( kettle , toaster etc ).

And don't forget to pass the site plug end of the cable through your tents cable entry point before you plug it into the sites power supply; trust me, it's easy to forget this! I think it is a safer set up although it did cost a bit more than an off the shelf hook up and took a little more organising too.
