I quite enjoyed the contrast between Cassidy, the district's sweetheart, and the total alpha male vibe from the district's most notorious bad boy Max Butcher. There's a lot of push and pull between the couple, Max doesn’t want to taint Cassidy by bringing her into his world but can’t stay away from her and Cassidy wants to be with Max but she ends up questioning her morals.

I don’t mind a ridiculously over-the-top pulp fiction, but I just couldn’t get over the fact that the heroine, an 18 year old Pollyanna who grew up coddled by her loving family, who is a professional ballet dancer, and who says “frick” instead of “fuck,” all of a sudden is capable of stabbing and shooting her would-be rapist then go on her merry way, still saying “frick” this and “frick that. Max, from the beginning, was an asshole, he knows he's an asshole, but he tries to be the person he knows he wants to be for Cassidy in their own way. They came back stronger after the events of the first part but then nothing is ever easy in the district and things come crashing down.This is a used book - there is no escaping the fact it has been read by someone else and it will show signs of wear and previous use. Through the start of this story Cassidy still acts quite young, she still seems very unsure and there are times where she accepts what Max does, but then wants him to change. For those that read Facing Us first, will appreciate the connection to this book and the backstory you got from that. Cassidy goes on a double date as a favour to her best friend Toni, she ends up hitting it off with the guy and they start making out.

Some plot hole are left open at the end of the book but that's too be expected in a duet and nothing is left grossly unexplained.

Nicci does well in capturing Cassidy's innocence, and her reactions to things feel real, any naïve young girl would react the way she does with things.
