This is not so much Monty the gardener and celebrity but more the naturalist and country man, in the manner of a latter day Jack Hargreaves. he notices the little things that so many of us 'gardeners' and outdoor people notice and gives lots of interesting extra facts.

I regard this book as a treasure trove of all the many wonders of the natural world that surround us. I'm an avid watcher of Garden's World and while I like gardening, I know little about it which is why this book was ideal - I know perhaps I should read a boo about gardening. This is not sentimental but rooted in the lived experience of the last thirty years or so based in Herefordshire.Although the book was predominantly written through the lockdowns of 2020, "the Don" (as I like to refer to him. Wildlife is not something that we watch happening in remote and exotic parts of the world on our screens, but right here in our own back yards and the more that we encourage it and learn to live with it, the more rewarding it becomes. qualified in the last portion of the INTRODUCTION:🌱 ‘…This book is personal, selective, and based on my own particular interests rather than trying to be a reference book of any kind. Some creatures are present in his book on a number of occasions, whilst others fail to appear at all, although they might be the stars of somebody else’s garden. His previous books include the Sunday Times bestseller Nigel, The Jewel Garden, Paradise Gardens and Japanese Gardens with Derry Moore , which was shortlisted for the Edward Stanford Travel Awards. I particularly enjoyed his heartfelt tribute to his beloved Nigel,So very moving and the book contains some lovely photos too.

My only criticism is I wish it had been purposefully written in a If, in our own modest back yards, we can help preserve and treasure our natural world, then we will make this planet a better place ~ not just for ourselves but for every living creature. By definition, it is fair to say that there are sensitive areas that may not be to everyone’s taste, but for the best part it makes for informative, descriptive reading, IMO. I found the book incredibly informative and I applied several of Monty’s suggestions in my garden throughout the seasons.

For anyone who watches Gardeners World and is familiar with Monty Dons famous dog, Nigel, there is a beautiful piece at the end of the book detailing the death of this gorgeous dog…. Best Christmas Releases* --While some gardeners appear bent on suppressing nature, Monty Don loves and works with it. The book is a Season by Season, month by month journal of sorts, cataloguing the observations of plant and animal life as they emerge and appear over the course of a year.I learned a lot from the book, including some of the complex aspects of wildlife conservation that mean things are not as black and white as they might first appear.
