About this deal

However, please note that our tool is for reference only and we recommend that you check the part number on your old unit prior to purchasing. We then fiddled around with the foot well lever for the bonnet yanking it backwards and forwards and finally after a while the bonnet eventually closed. If anyone with a Mk V finds their car's bonnet release lever hard to operate, don't wait and end up breaking the release lever.

JustAnswer is not intended or designed for EMERGENCY questions which should be directed immediately by telephone or in-person to qualified professionals. So I took it off again and went back to using the claw and then greased the latch up (especially when the clip is in the locked position - you can get down in the back of it with WD40 and grease). When this has been done, make sure the lock tensioner ball has been reconnected again and then pull on the handle in the car. First thing to say (and this is from retrospect, once I eventually got the catch off), it looks like, on my vehicle (Mk5 GT Tdi - 2004 model), there is an "emergency release" tag, sticking through the top slat of the grille, just on the driver's side of the VW badge. Read more about the condition New: A brand-new, unused, unopened and undamaged item in original retail packaging (where packaging is applicable).

Supposedly you can pop the front VW badge off the grille (rotate counter clockwise like a clock apparently) and pop the lock this way. Being able to recreate in this way meant I could the clean out the latch as much as I could even when it's in the locked position.

I tackled it for the third time this morning - but the first time in proper daylight - finally managed to get both metal tabs on the catch in both slots on the cable guide. The lead is secured along it's length to the bodywork in two places by two clips (one circled right). If I thought my Golf was going to last another 10 years, I would try and fashion a shield at the bottom of the catch body, or just below where it locates.Just over 12 months ago I tried to prevent my car's original bonnet latch mechanism (which was approaching 6 years old at the time) from seizing up completely. You should then get enough room to open the bonnet with the catch still attached to release it manually. Using the Dremmel, I carefully made the hole in the plastic grille, around the bolt-head, considerably larger. Last time I tried to remove the rust and stop it re-appearing by applying some oil but this didn't turn out to be a long term fix.

Warranty Coverage: In case a purchased product becomes faulty during its warranty period, for reasons unrelated to your acts, omissions or misuse of the goods, you must promptly notify us and fill out a warranty claim form. You should now be able to lift the latch mechanism out far enough to allow you to unhook the release cable.
