About this deal

The slicer works like a miniature Japanese mandoline—an angled blade on the end shaves the ginger into paper thin rounds (or longer planks if you shave it from the side).

It's nothing revolutionary, but if you use it instead of a spoon, you're dirtying one less piece of equipment. CONVENIENT USE - Non- slip handle for comfort and stability to grate or slice without applying much pressure on the food. The biggest difference between this grater and the classic zester-grater is the shape of its razor-like teeth.

The rasp-like tool features a peeler on the side to quickly remove the peel of knobby, fresh ginger root. A ginger grater is a tool designed for optimally mincing ginger, and it is made for getting the most out of the irregularly-shaped root. So while I'll hold onto my zester for when I need to trim frozen cake and my ribbon grater for whenever I'm feeling fancy, I have a feeling my ginger tool is bound to become a new essential for quicker, cleaner, more ginger-loaded weeknight cooking. We challenged chefs of three different skill levels - amateur Bianca, home cook Daniel, and professional chef Saúl Montiel from Cantina Rooftop - to make us their take on a classic frittata.A razor-sharp, angled slicing blade towards the bottom of the tool thinly slices ginger with ease and precision, retaining all of the root vegetable’s natural oils and aromas for optimum and full flavour. The soft touch handle of the Microplane Ginger 3-in-1 Tool provides comfort and control and when not in use the tool has a protective cover included.

This product has been classified as essential item by the New Zealand Government and can be purchased and delivered during lockdown. The tool often comes as a rounded ceramic dish with dull teeth in the center or as a flat, stainless-steel device with a handle. So with ceramic graters there’s a risk of using too much ginger in recipes (though admittedly that’s not really a bad thing in my book). Many savvy home chefs find themselves turning to Microplane when they need a reliable and sharp tool for their food prep.

But within a few months those little rectangular teeth become so dull they stop cutting and start mashing. Instead of rectangles, they’re triangles, which are far more efficient at cutting through the root’s fibers. Models with etched or stamped holes made quicker work of grating than did those with “crowns” (bigger, ragged-edged etched holes), teeth, or nubs, taking less than a minute to produce 1 tablespoon of puree.

These level tools are great for quickly yielding a good amount of ginger, while also being able to easily separate the liquid from the solid. Freshly grated ginger is a common component of recipes both sweet and savory, lending its distinctive aroma to cookies, cakes, and chutneys as well as stir-fries, glazes, sauces, and soups.
