About this deal

It seems to be a rumination on the connection between the past and the future -- the latter symbolized by the 9/11 attack, which ends the book. But I don't really understand Teresa and Ruben, both of whom do get something akin to personality grafts near the end of the book, and whose relationship seems largely based on (quite explicit) sex.

This short novella is set in the late 1990s, in Berlin, a city which has been the European magnetic center of the alternative scene since the late 1970s, at least.

The ending kind of threw me though, I sort of expected something different I guess, or maybe a bit more tension. After exercising your right of objection, we will not process your personal data further for these purposes, unless we can prove compelling reasons for processing worthy of protection that outweigh your interests, rights and freedoms, or if the processing serves to assert, exercise or defend legal claims. I won't lie, I did sigh and think to myself "Here we go again with the French obsession with sex and shoving it in all of their comics". On the other hand, an almost random meeting with another Italian living in Berlin, Ruben, will throw Teresa into a maelstrom of passion, crisis and a non-bourgeois lifestyle that clashes with her more professional, normative and linear aspirations.

Teresa meets Ruben, but he may not offer her the stability she needs as her insomnia frays her fragile mind. The cheeky "I know you don't understand a word" at the end was a really irritating poke in the eye of the reader. It's 2001, and Teresa, a young Italian suffering from insomnia and a generally fragile state of mind, has just arrived in Berlin with a grant to help organize an exhibit of Tutankhamen's treasure. dual story of an archeologist discovering an Egyptian tomb and a grad student with insomnia in Germany who meets a pretentious man child and has a lot of sex.

Between the 2 archeological storylines, the romantic relationship, and the connecting asides, I found the book's elements to be somewhat competitive vs harmonious. Asides from the plot synopsis of the novel, the story itself doesn't mention that it's set in the year 2001 at all. Note: this graphic novel has previously been published in French, German, and Spanish, and includes text in various foreign languages, most especially German as much of the story takes place in Berlin. This graphic novel follows Teresa, a scholar who travels to Berlin for an exhibition on Tutankhamen’s tomb.
