About this deal

It quickly became compulsive reading; sometimes I could not turn the next page quick enough; other times, I hesitated because I was anticipating some graphic unpleasantness coming up.

Can Luther employ his creative techniques to do it, or will the death of another innocent be on his hands? The story opens when one of Luther's friends on the police department gets roughed up by two thugs hired by a man who is trying to get a senior citizen to sell his home so the criminal can develop the land. Rob Farquhar of the Carins Post commended Neil Cross on the creation of DCI John Luther describing Luther as a man "possessed of brilliance and by an animal ferocity that he keeps from all but the monsters he seeks out". It's like Neil Cross sat down and decided to ponder: "what makes human beings, collectively, as a species, act insanely protective? He was once a post-grad English literature major, who met his wife, Zoe, when they took a comparative religion course together about twenty years ago. As a fan of the BBC AND of Crime stories, Luther seemed like a perfect match for me to add to my digital ‘to do’ list.

I can't give much away when it comes to the plot because it would all be spoilers for the tv series, but let us just say Luther is trying his best to save a newborn baby from the hands of a pedophile.I loved the way the character was developed throughout the story, and I love that this was a prequel to the series—I just hope there is some more. So never fear if you’re worried about making your way through 20 full episodes before watching Luther: The Fallen Sun for yourself as there are so many distinct stories to enjoy at your leisure. But, as already stated, these minor niggling points were not enough to dampen my overall enjoyment of this compelling read. Then there's Elba, who has gone from post-Wire lull to blockbuster star, with roles in Prometheus and Thor, and an upcoming stint as Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.

Neil also confirmed that the movie world is where Luther "lives now” so it seems much more likely that there’d be another Luther movie vs more seasons. Of course, there are no guarantees but it seems that at least as far as Neil Cross and lead star Idris Elba are concerned, they’re definitely up for it! It’s not quite as hard to read as, say, Will Carver’s nightmarish HINTON HOLLOW DEATH TRIP, which I still haven’t finished because I don’t want that shit in my head at night. Taking the text on it's own, he seems shallow and two-dimensional, once you picture him as Idris Elba and fill in the voice and the odd tics – in fact fill in a lot yourself, because it isn't written here – only then does the character feel fully formed. A “gripping, taut” (Guillermo del Toro) thriller featuring homicide detective John Luther, “who is intelligent and almost freakishly intuitive [and] belongs not only to the Sherlock Holmes tradition but also to the newer crime-fiction model elaborated by Thomas Harris in his novels Red Dragon, The Silence of the Lambs, and Hannibal” ( The New York Times).

We are dealing with brutal murder, kidnapping, abuse (both of people and animals), and in a few cases Luther is forced to converse with pedophiles.
