About this deal

There is quite a lot of French woven into the narrative, which has been included presumably to give the story a fulsome flavour of France and lend authenticity to location. While I found it nice to have closure on these plot points, it didn’t feel as nice to have them play out so abruptly. The Audible narration was effective, overcoming some of the possible weaknesses of the incomplete story. Because I had agreed to read the book without reading the blurb (yes, I trust Louise this much) I had no idea I was embarking for a trip to my home country.

He is still suffering from his demons that we saw in Impostor but there is also some glimmer of hope for him as he gets close to someone that he originally meets by chance but is also found to be caught up in the case.

Gregory's internal conflicts and interpersonal relationship challenges directly influenced the storyline, especially how they linked back to Book 1. I am enjoying watching Alexander Gregory grow into his character and how he separates his personal life from his work life and will be interested to learn even more about him. In his personal life, however, he is a tormented soul and he can often find himself distracted by issues from his childhood that can overwhelm him – invariably in his dreams. LJ Ross is an international bestselling author, best known for creating atmospheric mystery and thriller novels, including the DCI Ryan series of Northumbrian murder mysteries which have sold over four million copies worldwide. This time around the action moves from Ireland to France, with Gregory and his mentor, Bill, speaking at a conference in Paris.

Maybe the author thought that everyone has a basic understanding of French, but I don't and pausing to use Google translate every couple of pages ruined it for me slightly. Camille hasn’t spoken since she was attacked, which means the police are unable to get a handle on her attacker or understand the motive. Overall, I don't regret reading this second installment but felt the author missed an opportunity by not including more substance and engaging storyline depth to this book. I think it is an incredibly tricky aspect to get the balance just right, so that smatterings of a foreign language appeal to people both more confident in a foreign language and to those who perhaps have never had the opportunity to experiment with languages – it is a very broad brush. I enjoyed the first book in this series, but I just couldn’t connect with this new cast of characters and Parisian background. Each character we meet has their own demons to battle, their own secrets that they are reluctant to share, each one of them drip fed to readers building tension and expectation perfectly. She’s recovering well in hospital but it takes a few days for her to speak, although she seems to have lost her memory. He did meet a girl that he got involved with, but his guilt is so strong he refused to let it go anywhere.
