Well, as Kirschner and Hendrick explain, the misapplication of educational theory is unfortunately prevalent: one only has to think of Bloom’s Taxonomy and Multiple Intelligences as cases in point. The authors provide all important details that the reader needs to understand each chapter independently, but, of course, you will get the most out of the book if you read them all. I suspect I will be using this for many years to come - and you don't often get that from many books!

However, there is a reflex-like tendency to reject new evidence or knowledge because it contradicts established norms, beliefs, or paradigms, which some scholars have critiqued as rooted in the scientific management and neo-managerial norms that seek to disseminate knowledge in formalized, routine, and procedural ways that lack appropriate grounding in the science of learning ( Myran and Sutherland, 2019). Even physics, which impacts every waking second of our lives, needs to be made relevant with stories, metaphors, and examples. Schools looking to implement professional development on teaching and learning on an evidence-based footing would do well to use it as the foundation of any programme.

Fueled by obsession, he had memorized so many key dates and events that you’d think he was studying for an exam. is Emeritus Professor Educational Psychology at the Open University of the Netherlands, Guest Professor at the Thomas More University of Applied Science in Mechelen, Belgium, Honorary Doctor (Doctor Honoris Causa) at the University of Oulu, Finland, and owner of kirschner-ED which carries out educational consultancy, masterclasses for teachers, school heads and educational policy makers, and keynotes/presentations at conferences and other educational get-togethers.

A World War I video on YouTube piqued his interest and led him to all kinds of books and documentaries about the war. The layout of How Learning Happens is very clever in that each section builds on the last to help the reader understand the what, the why and the how for each key reading. When the pain of the status quo hurts more than the pain of discipline, people are capable of extraordinary feats of learning. Future historians of education will look back on this period as a Renaissance; a time when dogma and orthodoxy were being challenged, and gate keepers, priesthoods and shamans felt the ground shift beneath their feet. The main focus of this book is to cover 28 of the key works from educational and cognitive psychology to help inform you in your teaching.

It’s no surprise that one of the most popular videos about him on YouTube has the words “fun” and “imagine” in the title. There are some “famous” (in the realms of educational psychology at least) academics here: Sweller, Rosenshine, Wiliam and Black; and there are some not so famous, such as Rothkopf and Pintrich. The papers are grouped into six distinct fields: how the brain works; prerequisites for learning; how learning can be supported; teacher activities; learning in context; and, perhaps most interestingly, cautionary tales and the deadly sins of education.
