About this deal

In a world of nearly limitless home entertainment options, this blog is designed to serve as a guide to topics including broadcast, streaming, Blu-ray and other physical media, home theater gear, and anything else to help you figure out what to watch and how best to watch it. This is an absolute must for action fans and Van Damme fans, an all time perfect movie that never gets old. Kino Lorber Studio Classics gives this fan-favorite a worthy 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray upgrade with a terrific Dolby Vision transfer and some new bonus features. There's a significant amount of detail noticeable here that isn't quite as obvious on the included Blu-ray disc, and better depth and texture to the picture as well. I switched over to the standard Blu-ray in the case afterward, and that disc is a decided downgrade in appearance.

Perhaps some of the darker footage again produces light black crush, but the stylization is such that it is tolerable. In New Orleans, handsome drifter Chance Boudreaux (Jean-Claude Van Damme, Death Warrant, Maximum Risk) is approached by a beautiful girl (Yancy Butler, Drop Zone, Fast Money) looking for her father, a homeless vet.s Universal Soldier and 1994's Timecop might have been his biggest hitters at the Box Office but, sandwiched in-between, Hard Target is easily the best action film in his entire career. Nothing makes sense in it, but the action, the dialog, and even the hairstyles are so wild that one truly can't stop watching. Hard Target was shot on 35mm film and has been gifted a new native 4K restoration pulled direct from the original camera negative. The included Blu-ray contains the same audio commentary as well as quite a few other supplements starting with the excellent From Hard Boiled to Hard Target, a thirteen minute interview with John Woo where he talks about the differences between the Hong Kong and Hollywood systems, his thoughts on working with Chuck Pfarrer and with Van Damme (who he says really loved Hong Kong film), getting along with his producers (especially Sam Raimi), his personal love of Alain Delon's films and Van Damme's resembelnce to him from certain angles, the importance of making his actors look great, changes that were made to the dialogue during the shoot, borrowing from the end of Hard-Boiled for the ending of this movie, running into issues getting final approval after editing the film with Bob Murawski, having more creative freedom in Hong Kong than in Hollywood and what he learned about Hollywood and America from working on the film. That’s when the close-quarters automatic weapons combat takes over, and the director finally gets to indulge in the “heroic bloodshed” tropes he was famous for and actually good at delivering.

Not to mention the strange star power of Jean-Claude Van Damme, who plays Chance Boudreaux, a Cajun former Marine who finds himself pit against Emil Fouchon (Lance Henriksen), the organizer of the manhunts. However, the darker areas look shakier, so the fluctuations and the softness that comes with them are more pronounced. It certainly lent itself well to the auteur's distinctive balletic action style and, at the same time, probably made Van Damme look the coolest he'd ever looked (and, likely, ever will). At one point, Van Damme punches a snake to knock it unconscious, and later he winks conspiratorially at a pigeon that “helped” him take down a goon.

Starring Jean Claude Van Damme at the height of his popularity, the movie is presented on this UHD/Blu-ray combo pack from Kino Lorber in its one-hundred minute unrated ‘International Cut' with a host of new extra features. The technical storage or access is strictly necessary for the legitimate purpose of enabling the use of a specific service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user, or for the sole purpose of carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network. The movie builds nicely to a very intense, and ridiculously intense, finale that takes place in a ‘Mardi Gras Graveyard' (which is a warehouse full of old parade floats) that proves to be the perfect place for Woo to unleash his considerable talent for staging high octane gun-fu sequences that are, if not particularly realistic, pure eye candy in the best possible way.

Also fans of Van Damme all no doubt agree that this is one of the muscles from Brussels best films, not only for the awesome action pieces but also the high production values on display. It's a shame really, because there are some impressive DV tones, particularly in brake lights and street lighting, popping like this film has never popped before, but it's simply unwatchable. One of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s most successful movies – in box office terms certainly – is the mightily good fun Hard Target. In December 2018, the entertainment chain HMV went into administration for a second time, with seemingly no way forward for the business. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products.
