About this deal

There’s a lot of discussion about why ‘Personal Jesus’ was controversial, but they realised they had on their hands, a song that was not only really good, but it was going to cause a certain degree of controversy, not least in the US where all of a sudden, they’d been blown into the mainstream. Halo – The Story Behind Depeche Mode’s Classic Album Violator will be published as a paperback book and e-book on 29 September 2022 by Grosvenor House Publishing.

The Halo book is the story of the classic Depeche Mode album Violator and they discuss the album, the era, and get insights from them on all things Violator. Halo' goes behind the scenes of Depeche Mode's 'Violator' era – a biography and oral history from those who were there in the studio, working behind the cameras, producing sleeves, appearing in the videos, support acts, tour managers, publicists and, of course, the fans.million copies following its release in March 1990, ‘Violator’ gave the cult British band – Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher and Alan Wilder – the critical acclaim they finally deserved. Each single would have its associated radio and TV play, with the latter more often than not featuring an accompanying lip-synced performance to a backing track. The first in-depth look at the making of Depeche Mode’s Violator and its enduring legacy, by Kevin May and David McElroy.

Jim manages to interview the band too with Gahan telling him that it was “really flattering” that so many people had come to see Depeche Mode. During an intense and pivotal two-and-a-half years in the life of the group, we follow Depeche Mode as they complete their metamorphosis into one of the most significant bands of a generation, and place the success and innovations of 'Violator' at the dead centre of the rapidly-changing late-80s, early-90s musical zeitgeist. If not for this album, probably I wouldn’t dive deep into the in depeche MODE’s music as much as it happened after 1989.

There have been many examples of this and I wouldn’t have been able to add anything to the narrative on the album.

The second reason, equally important, is to collect all the diffused pieces of information, sometimes trifles, so that they are finally in one place. The ‘Music For The Masses Tour’ triggered the beginnings of a rethink as to how Depeche would have to tackle the US from a promotional perspective for albums in the future.Coincidentally, an early job in journalism was as a reporter in Essex, covering Depeche Mode’s hometown of Basildon. At various points this month we will share highlights from the book and even a few exclusives that you won't find in the book or anywhere else. Halo’ is about Depeche Mode and their 1990 album ‘Violator’ – a landmark record and is beloved by fans. One aspect of this month's blog special that I'm particularly happy to share with you is that it will feature exclusive excerpts from Halo - The Story Behind Depeche Mode's Classic Album Violator, the book I have co-authored with Kevin May which is to released this May.
