About this deal

Delderfield is brilliant at immersing his readers into different periods, in this instance Victorian England. It is cut from the same bolt, a long, leisurely, rambling tale about many characters told from the point of view of many characters. The marriage storyline is interesting and while weird does give a lot of time to the female perspective (as well as a second female character, one of his lieutenants with romantic tension). She ended up turning her job over to her husband and becoming a

Struggling through strange, often hostile country, with insufficient food and sometimes mutinous men, his one aim is to reach the coast and, hopefully, safety .

Paul and Claire Craddock have grown older in years - but not in spirit, but changes are taking place in the countryside. Ratcliffe took credit for an idea of his wife to use their wagons to begin charging for excursions of people to sights of interest during the summer months.

I first read this series when I was spending a summer flat on my back with Mono – Ever since it has been the standard of historical fiction that i measure other books by.Adam then tried to get in touch with Avery to discuss his purchase of the 'Tryst' but couldn't locate him. Adam told her about the business he had in mind and she suggested a logo for him of a Swan on Wheels. Henry Wood with is cited several times along the narrative and was mostly related to Henrietta character while the firs ones were related to their children's education.

The sections in which Adam Swann’s business are described in detail can be a bit of a yawn; and, Adam has a tendency to talk in huge paragraphs. Adam arrived in town at the time of the riot and watched as Sam, Matthew and his son Makepeace Goldthorpe (the man Henrietta was to marry) rode into town. Adam founds a national network of wagoners, and the stories of his workers, some of whom rise from the ghetto, are fascinating. I will move on to the next book in the series but I don't feel completely enthusiastic about doing so.

Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking. The dust jacket has a little wear, with a few small scuffs and the front inside-flap has been clipped. I loved, loved, loved that this was set in Victorian England and didn’t just focus on London, but the entire country, and more so that specific issues are highlighted and addressed. The collapse in church-going in these isles (despite his enthusiasm for multiculturalism, Moreton never really grapples with the transplanting of Allah, Buddha and the Hindu deities to Britain) is just one of a series of narratives that make up this book.
