About this deal

Pros: It made me consider cultural capital as a power dynamic in gentrification and how cultural power dynamics in shape personal taste. Too many references to other authors in the text made it at times a bit of a mash-up: other views could have been more often integrated more elegantly with a footnote referring to the authors. Like the author, I am white middle mom who made this place my home to find a cheaper way to raise my kids in an expensive city, opening the flood gates for yoga studios, drag brunch, and oat milk lattes.

Su principal tesis es señalar que la gentrificación no es un fenómeno natural (del capitalismo) ni uno que sea inevitable (por las dinámicas del mercado). Rather than firmly grasping it, gentrification remains an apparition that recedes just before she can catch it. but to compare her besties drag king performance as a hysterical gentrifier to Moms 4 Housing or landback movements or, hell, even CLTs seems weird and distorting. Gentrification Is Inevitable and Other Lies is a humane analysis of the many contributing and consequential factors of urban takeovers. She’s right about everything, and this is a great book for people who may not have already been thinking on this path, but it doesn’t present much of a solution for those of us in the “first wave” who are barely hanging on as it is. the "it's not just about housing" section leans into cultural exclusion to me in an unproductive way. A stunning visual celebration of the model for social housing, the Golden Lane Estate, with commissioned photography, illuminating architectural history of the building and fascinating interviews with residents of the Estate. Didn't give this a 4* as it was written in a more academic styel than I personally like in non-fiction. The myths are "Gentrification is Natural", "is about Taste, Money, Class, Physical Displacement", "is a Metaphor", and "is Inevitable".

Por lo cuál difícilmente puede lograr tener las escalas de cambio para enfrentar un fenómeno que se presenta en muchas ciudades del planeta. However, the rest of the book didn't resonate with me, and I even ended up even more confused by what gentrification actually is (or more like, what it isn't, as the way it's presented is very broad).Kern tackles several "lies" people have told and also believe about gentrification and disproves them with copious evidence. Each chapter contains solid examples of where, when, and why gentrification is appearing in communities, and what the impact is on each respective group. Que aunque no se ha puesto suficiente interés para documentarlo, teorizarlo y cuantificarlo, las victorias han sucedido.

An interesting and thorough exploration of gentrification and its impacts with a focus on resisting it. g., gentrification is natural; gentritifcation is about class; gentrification is inevitable… Kern argues these myths are incomplete, often false, and are designed to conceal the rapaciousness of urban dispossession.sure there's lots of other elements and socio-emotional implications but Kern's attempt to almost pit class against race against gender against sexuality seems like some weird, unhelpful vendetta.
