About this deal

Just because an airline flies big aircraft, it doesn't mean that it will have enough space for each passenger to carry a bag in the cabin. I've been on flights where it is announced that overhead bin space is limited and anyone who has a bag they would like to "gate-check" is invited to . We have hundreds of planes with a wide variety of bins but, by 2023, we expect over 80% of our mainline fleet to have the new bins. My objections to this (and I still want to just regular check the bags) is that I think gate checking would involve someone writing the information on the tag rather than a computerized tag at the check-in counter.

The Lufthansa carry on size requirements are almost identical to United's (1cm shorter lengthways but slightly longer for the other dimensions). Living in paris now, I pretty much flu Air France exclusively and I can tell you 9/10 times they ask me to check my carry on bag as well as others saying the flight is full. I had thought this time - if we were to carry on the 22 inchers - that our back packs would also be tucked in them which would add to the weight as well as the volume.Which brings me to the point; bags are good if it's raining, because even with a jetway, the stroller will be exposed at least somewhat to the elements. A lot of strollers get broken because they pop open en route and you have some baggage guy trying fold it back down.

So now, I’m working on ways to lighten my load further and find a bag that won’t balloon up when packed (I’m a 2-wheel only snob since we walk long distances with our bags). A "gate check", as described by Hunt, is when you have regional flights on small commuter jets or turbo props where the overhead bins are too small to take a compliant carry on. This can be a big problem if you are connecting to a longer flight and have needed items in your carry-on bag. Try taking significantly overweight bags on European LCCs and let us know if these magic tricks work to prevent your bag from being gate checked. I fly frequently and believe that the people who habitually try to bring in a roller bag, a backpack and a briefcase or large purse and a carry on are total douchebags. And the ones who expect the flt attendants or other passengers to “help” them lift their overweight bags into the bin are worse. This may not be the reason for your issue, but passengers in the last boarding groups (as identified on your ticket) are often told they have to gate check their bag, even though there may be ample space in the overhead bins. Gate check bags are travel bags specially designed for the transportation and storage of car seats and strollers or pushchairs.

We got to the gate in AMS and I could not believe the sizes of carry ons that people were bringing on board. Also, the JL Childress Standard/Double Stroller Gate Check Bag features two webbing handles for effortless lifting, reinforced seams for strength and a personal identification box for reassurance. Not forgetting the big white ID box for your name which will help your quickly identify your belongings.

The good news is that airlines are working to make gate checking a thing of the past by retrofitting overhead bins to ensure there's space for every carry-on on board. People either have bags up there WAY above size limits or waste space with a bunch of small bags that should. No need to fumble with a bag sizer — the gate agent can just demand that any large bag be weighed and since *everyone’s* carry on is.
