About this deal

Demeter mourning her daughter Persephone, Icarus flying too close to the sun, Theseus and the Minotaur … all are captured here with the author’s characteristic erudition and flair.

The first volume contains three of the big five with Egil’s Saga, Eyrbyggia Saga and Njal’s Saga, along with other gems including the stories that relate to the discovery and attempted colonization of the Americas in the 10 th century, and one of the Sagas of the Poets which features two poets in love with the same woman. In the words of the editor for this edition, "His comments on the stories, printed at the end of each section, are a magpie's nest of anecdotes, other people's half-digested ideas, bucking-bronco rides on every Gravesian hobby-horse from magic mushrooms to goddess-fixation, and the purest fantasy" (p. All jokes aside: the fact that Graves is nigh-ubiquitously dismissed in modern-day classics as a pseudoscientific conspiracy theorist with some incredibly weird ideas about women and about the formation of mythology in general (as well as someone who appeared to genuinely believe he had communicated with the Roman emperor Claudius) is a goddamn relief, given the unfortunate prevalence of conspiracy theory-esque nonsense masquerading as genuine scholarship.

It’s an old volume – the stories were compiled by Lady Gregory in the early 1900s and there is a preface by William Yeats. Using classical sources he constructed a complexly compelling tale of the life of the Roman emperor Claudius, a tale extended in Claudius the God (1935). They think that the copy I picked up in the Reading Room is the current published version and the larger dimensions advertised on the web site are incorrect and refer to a previous edition.Otherwise, I think it would work very well as a 'reference book', picking each story to read as it comes to mind. My only complaint is that they should have left in Graves' original line references to the primary sources. La scelta espositiva cronologica dà un'affascinante impronta narrativa all'imponente mole di conoscenze raccolte. The book includes extracts ranging from from The History of the Kings of Britain by Geoffrey of Monmouth and The Death of King Arthur, to The Romance of Tristan and Iseult by Joseph Bedier, The High Book of the Grail, and Parzifal by Wolfram von Eschenbach. To mark Folio’s 75th anniversary, Michael Ende’s The Neverending Story is published as a magical new edition, beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Marie-Alice Harel and bursting with exquisite design details.

It's also notable that all of the sources he does present conform to his own ideas - a further sign of his writing to an agenda (Murray influenced or not). One last comment, I found it interesting to think about whether or not these myths influenced morality - or at least tried to influence it.He is most noted for his series of novels about the Roman emperor Claudius and his works on mythology, such as The White Goddess. ROBERT GRAVES (1895-1985) was an English poet, translator, and novelist, one of the leading English men of letters in the twentieth century. Each myth is presented in the voice of a narrator writing under the Antonines, such as Plutarch or Pausanias, with citations of the classical sources. As this is an overview it does not include ALL Greek myth, but the main ones that are quite popular. It's precisely as "scholarly" studies that they disappointed me; and yes, they certainly also fail as "story-telling".

For what is really only a few dollars more you get these well-bound volumes with black and white illustrations. His lifetime obsession with the Great Goddess is transparent there, and he interprets nearly every single motif as a hidden rendering of her cult. The first adventure in the Folio Society editions of ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ series, Enid Blyton’s The Enchanted Wood features Jonathan Burton’s enchanting illustrations and a new introduction by Michael Morpurgo. Questo voluminoso libro è uno studio sistematico dell'evoluzione della mitologia presso l'antica cultura greca.Graves takes each myth--from the Creation through Odysseus' homecoming at the end of The Odyssey--and provides a synopsis of all of the variations, includes a comprehensive set of bibliographic citations associated with the source(s) for each myth and its variations, and then follows that up with detailed set of explanatory notes and comments.
