About this deal

We don’t have any plans to re-jacket the rest of the series (we publish several of the early sequels) but this could change! Dune: winner of the prestigious Hugo and Nebula awards, and widely considered one of the greatest science fiction novels ever written. The Frank Herbert 1965 novel also inspired the controversial 1984 film adaptation by maverick film director, David Lynch. It is the story of Paul Atreides, the man who would become Dune Messiah, and of the giant sand worms which haunt the desert landscapes. From the start, I found it difficult to relate to them, because their nature is so far removed from my own.

And in a highly advanced world with no thinking machines, Dune examines in some detail what would replace them. The sale of customised goods or perishable goods, sealed audio or video recordings, or software, which has been opened. Dune 50th Anniversary Edition": Commemorating the milestone of the original "Dune" novel, this special edition includes extra content, annotations, and insights from the author, Frank Herbert, providing a deeper understanding of the epic tale that started it all. The first great English detective novel, Wilkie Collins’ The Moonstone is presented in a Folio Society limited edition of 750 numbered copies. For Dune they have commissioned Sam Weber, an artist who has previously worked on their editions of Lord of the Flies and Fahrenheit 451.God Emperor of Dune": Set thousands of years after the events of the first three books, the fourth installment centers on Leto II, the God Emperor, a being who has transformed himself into a hybrid human-sandworm. Other cancelled products: If you want to cancel products that are not damaged or incorrectly supplied, then you must inform us of this within seven working days following the date of receipt in accordance with the Distance Selling Regulations or otherwise as soon as possible. Charmed Life arrives in an explosion of magic in this edition illustrated by Alison Bryant and introduced by Katherine Rundell. However, despite the grand scale of Herbert’s fully formed universe, at its heart Dune is the story of a single boy, Paul Atreides, who finds himself caught in the web of a myth, centuries in the making. His first science-fiction story, ‘Looking for Something’, was published in the pulp-science-fiction magazine Startling Stories (1952), and his first novel, The Dragon in the Sea (1956) was serialised soon afterwards.

Combine that with the impeccable attention to detail that the Folio Society lavish on every publication they produce and you have a book to cherish. His illustrations for Dune were painted in oil on board, with the black-and-white chapter headings in ink and charcoal on paper. It could be bought at a chemist, it was the subject of CIA experiments on mind control, it was spoken about at lecterns as cures for all pyschological illnesses. The sci-fi adventure that launched a global franchise, Planet of the Apes is given a timely Folio release with David de las Heras’s spectacular artwork and a thought-provoking introduction by primatologist Frans de Waal. Betrayed and exiled into the waterless deserts of Arrakis, his destiny will not only be fulfilled, but the future of humankind decided, and from the dunes will arise a saviour – Muad’Dib – both terrible and beautiful in his absolute power. Also included is an illuminating afterword by Brian Herbert, son of the author, who has penned several best-selling novels that expand the Dune universe.

Mary Shelley's darkly disturbing tale is illustrated by Angela Barrett and newly introduced by Richard Holmes. My copy is from the third printing of this particular edition, so corrections may have been made in subsequent runs, but still: for shame, Hodder, for shame! Without any emotional investment in the novel’s main character, I very nearly lost interest altogether. The first Dune Book can be read as standalone but if you really enjoyed it, Dune Messiah is definitely worth reading. TLDR I'd recommend anyone who cares about quality and attention to detail to steer clear of the Hodder Publishing version of Dune.

He published many other science-fiction novels, such as his WorShip series and the ConSentient novels, but Dune, which was made into a film in 1984 (two years before Herbert’s death), and into a television series in 2000, remains his most enduring work. Within a day his young son is nearly assassinated in his bed and there is a prophecy of something great coming. In 2017 the matching edition of Dune Messiah arrived, but it looked like the project had stalled because there were no dates for the rest. Not as much going on in this book and found it hard to concentrate as there is a lot of names being banded about. The Harkonnens don't want to give up their privilege, though, and through sabotage and treachery they cast young Duke Paul Atreides out into the planet's harsh environment to die.

The story explores the multi-layered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion, as the factions of the empire confront each other in a struggle for the control of Arrakis and its spice. The story is set more than 20,000 years in the future, the human race has spread across multiple worlds and are ruled by feudal royal houses. Dune is about change and the excitement of that happening, Messiah is about the consequences of that change and having to deal with the awful reality of it all, so its a bit bleak at times but reading it straight away after Dune was important to me as it felt like the conclusion to Paul's Dune experience. Like David Lean’s film Lawrence of Arabia – the modern work of art Dune most resembles – Herbert’s novel exhibits epic sweep while remaining, at heart, the intensely moving story of a young man caught up in a myth.Arrakis, or Dune, is a planet of nothingness – its torched wastelands are home to a fierce nomadic people, and under the endless deserts stalk gargantuan sandworms the size of starships. and could not be prouder to present our 50th-anniversary edition of the greatest science fiction novel of all time, newly reset and featuring this glorious new artwork, to a new generation of readers.
