About this deal

Not so James Urquhart in the Financial Times: "Down Under exhibits a smoother and more mature humour than previous works. je relirai ce livre avec plaisir et intérêt, j'ai découvert que l'auteur est assez prolixe pour d'autres voyage-reportages ! A lice Springs sounds like a real let down along with the population of Darwin, apart from that it all sounds so enticing, even with all the animals there that would kill you several times over!

There is no shortage of idiots - which is why Down Under will sell thousands more copies than Anglo-Australian Attitudes. As a Brit, I found Down Under infinitely less threatening and much more enjoyable than Notes on a Small Island (see separate review); the latter which is nonetheless great itself. Bryson's agreeable writing style , including his unique sense of humour , as with all his books, are an important and entertaining feature. My nonfiction books 'Paranormal Warwickshire', 'Illustrated Tales of Warwickshire' and 'A-Z of Warwick' are published by Amberley Publishing. We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed. Also, his insatiable thirst for detail finds him, as ever, ferreting out the who, the why and the where to enhance the reader's knowledge of the book's subject matter. However, when Bryson switches his attention to our Antipodean cousins, all of that angst immediately dissipates, and you can sit back and enjoy his particular talent for finding nuanced little stories in among the detritus of life and bringing them to life with his sparkling and witty prose. I felt, when reading this book that here we have an author who's churning out one book after another, thinking he's found a winning formula when really it all gets a bit same-o.

He reviewed the new Bryson alongside another book about Australia, Michael Davie's Anglo-Australian Attitudes.

This is, after all, a man who sits through the capital's promotional tourist video, Canberra - It's Got It All! The people are cheerful, extroverted, quick-witted and unfailingly obliging: their cities are safe and clean and nearly always built on water; the food is excellent; the beer is cold and the sun nearly always shines.
