About this deal

Alexander Williams, a great connoisseur and admirer of sherry products, and Arthur Humbert, a specialist in international relations. My optimistic guess is they’re catering to the growing number of rum enthusiasts who recognize that aging in the tropics is different from aging elsewhere. Rums from Barbados and Guyana are matured for five years in the Caribbean before being transported to Jerez where they are further matured in solera systems of Dos Cortados Palo Cortado Sherry casks (exactly the same as the 5+3) and then also Don Guido Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks. A peculiarity with this rum is that it start as English styled rum and finish up as a Latin styled rum in my opinion.

My only quibble is that my bottle has a clear plastic label (rather than the darkly coloured brownish red label shown to the left). This time, I’m going to talk about a rum brand who isn’t and rum brands in general who aren’t entirely transparent with the sweetening of their products.Awards: - Bronze medal in 2008 at the International Rum Festival (San Francisco) - Silver medal in 2008 at the San Francisco World SpiritsTasting notes:Colour: gold. I myself rather enjoy sherry once in a blue moon (as well in cocktails) so I’ll probably pick up a bottle for the collection. Thus, all of the work produced on this blog is protected by copyright, including all of the pictures and all of the articles.

The content is a full bottle of 5+5 and four samples, one each of the rum base, the Dos Cortados Sherry, the 5+3 and the Don Guido Pedro Ximenez(PX) Sherry. In addition, its alcohol content of 40% makes it a powerful but balanced drink that can be enjoyed on any occasion. To my understanding, they will only tell a consumer that their rum has additives if the consumer asks. Maybe I am getting old and need new glasses, then again, maybe I wouldn’t need new glasses if labels are designed with proper colour contrast in mind. In fact, if I tasted this spirit blind, it might be hard for me to decide whether I was sampling a rum or a sherry.I’ve been intrigued by this one given the novel ageing approach you described, but I’ve yet to taste it. After having aged for 5 years in the Caribbean and 3 years in the wood of "two cut", the rum two woods 5 + 3 passes through a third phase of aging in barrels aging "Don Guido" Pedro Ximénex for 20 years certified By the Sherry Regulatory Council.

When it arrives it is transfered to casks which previously held Dos Cortados, Palo cortado sherry for 3 years then transfered to casks which previously held Don Guido Pedro Ximenez sherry, the sweetest variety of sherry for 2 years. Enjoyed with advantageously in a suitable glass, but also very used by professional bartenders in Div. This rum is too sweet and has to much taste of the PX Sherry in my opinion, but it has been very enjoyable to follow the development of this rum from the base via 5 + 3 to 5 + 5 and see how this aging (and eventually some added flavors) have changed taste and appearance. I started the tasting with the base which is a blend of 5yo rum from Guyana(DDL) and 5yo rum from Barbados (a little unclear if it comes from WIRD or Foursquare, seen both data) imported to Jerez in Spain, it’s quite good and I can clearly recognize Demerara.Consequently, this has been a great find - sweet and smooth with the rich, dark fruit flavours I look for in a sipping rum (raisin, currants, fig) and a nice mouth-feel and finish. Premium and very high quality sweet-sharp Spanish blended rum Dos Maderas PX 5+5, which has won a large number of world medals and matures in a very interesting and high quality method.

This is seasoned by some tropical spice and wrapped in sherry notes, with wisps of smoky oak and a touch of tobacco leaf. After 30 minutes in the glass almost all the whiskey/bourbon taste is gone, and the sherry flavour is fruiter than sweet. Triple aged rum that was awarded the Gold Medal at the Ministry of Rum Tasting Competition in Miami 2009. It is recommended to be consumed on its own, with or without ice, but always with good company for a long after-dinner drink. These rums are sent to Jerez to be aged for an additional three years in 20 year old Palo Cortado casks, and an additional two years in casks of 20 year old Pedro Ximénez casks. I get light and short aromas of red grapes, red grape skin, grape-flavored cough syrup, raisins, cinnamon, figs, and vanilla. This is probably the most fruit filled rum I have tasted thus far with flavours of raisins, prunes and dates pouring out onto the palate.
