About this deal

If Parrot promised and delivered on that range reliably, I would view it as an attribute on a cheap drone that is trying to straddle the gap between a tool and a toy, a sensible trade-off between safety and capability. I flew the drone out over the East River, figuring that if it fell into the drink, that would make a great conclusion to my review. Other drones can fly a lot further—the DJI Mavic Pro did better than a mile (5,280 feet) in similar conditions. But it's significantly larger in size, and is not capable of the same acrobatic tumbles as the Bebop. The ability to choose your own geo-fence could make it a solid backup in case DJI’s GeoFencing system has you grounded.

The CockpitGlasses have been updated and now collapse for easier storage, and they accept phones with screens from 4. The Bebop 2 is equipped with a new brighter fish-eye lens providing better clarity even in low light. It’s large batteries mean it flies for longer than its competitors, but the downside is that it isn’t as portable because it doesn’t fold up.

It can hold up to 8GB of data a time—more than enough for a few fullly charged batteries worth of aerial footage. It’s a big difference, too, so it’s worth trying out in a large open space, only after you’re a little more comfortable handling the drone. What you lose in features (as found in the app) you gain in control but that being said, it is not the greatest feeling controller ever. Parrot has put plenty of effort in to make sure this is a more rounded drone with technology and features to appeal to all pilots.

Its extended operating range and GPS technology enable users to explore and capture footage from a distance, providing a broad perspective. You can then choose whether to view the 720p video feed from the drone, or have the map covering the screen with the video as a thumbnail. Going with just the Skycontroller is a fine choice if you just want to practice your skills and do a few tricks—the Bebop 2 can flip forward, backward, or barrel roll in either direction. We particularly like that it really slows down the rotation speed, as it’s far too easy on other drones to turn round too quickly without realising that the resulting video is unwatchable. There's no tactile feedback provided by on-screen joysticks, which makes precision control extremely difficult. While the DJI Spark has a microSD slot for storage, the Bebop 2 Power instead opts for 8GB of integrated flash storage, of which about 7GB is actually usable. There's plenty of resolution to cover the 2MP per frame that you get from 1080p, but because it's cropped from a tiny point-and-shoot sized image sensor and an ultra-wide lens, you get blurry edges and soft details.

The main things that you need to know about the new Parrot Bebop 2 Power are that it’s come a long way since the lovable but restricted Bebop 2. PCMag is obsessed with culture and tech, offering smart, spirited coverage of the products and innovations that shape our connected lives and the digital trends that keep us talking.

I have flown drones from DJI, Yuneec, 3D Robotics, and Blade at these same spots in the past without any troubles. If you're concerned about flying too far from home, the Parrot app allows you to set up a geofence to limit the Bebop's operating range.

Build quality seems a bit flimsy, but the combination of carbon fibre and ‘Grilamid’ plastic is tough and makes the drone light at just 525g. Saying that the Bebop 2 Power offers an hour of flight might be a little disingenuous considering you’ll need to swap out batteries to achieve this time. A radar shows both the direction you’re facing and that of the drone, which helps you to keep your bearings – not so easy to do when the drone is a distance away. The upgraded model has improved hardware and software, as well as an impressive 30 minutes of flight time. IMO this was mainly down to software issues of the FFPro flight application which appears to now be stable and safe at version 5. Parrot says it can get up to 25 minutes, but you can expect more like 20 minutes -- less if you're moving fast or doing flips. But that's a serious limitation for anyone who lives in a densely populated area and is looking at the the Bebop as a tool for capturing sweeping aerial views of the neighborhood. The first thing that you notice when you unbox the Bebop 2 is that it is very lightweight – coming in at under 500g.
