Crowley's Book of Thoth is not one I'd recommend for anyone who wants to learn how to read these cards. But to manage to utilize them as easily as the Rider-Waite, I found that two other books are indispensable complements : 'Tarot: Mirror of the Soul', by Gerd Zeigler, and 'Understanding Aleister Crowley’s Thoth', by Lon Milo Duquette. Although the cards do have a dark and masculine feel about them, many of them contain bright and colourful images. I own several books that specialize in this deck, and my favorite by far is Tarot Mirror of the Soul by Gerd Zeigler.

I feel like I am light years behind in reviewing this deck, which, along with the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, is not only a popular deck, but a classic Tarot deck. It talks about Lady Harris and her involvement in the creation of the deck, the exhibition in 1942, includes 2 essays from Lady Harris, and the content of the cards themselves. Writings of British mystic Aleister Crowley on occult practices influenced the development of Neopaganism, various religious movements that arose chiefly in the United Kingdom and the United States in the late 1900s and that combine worship of pagan nature deities, particularly of the earth, with benign witchcraft. The classic Crowley Thoth Small Tarot deck is presented in Premier Edition format for greater display impact and less pilferage.I do not know enough to say anything about the individuals known as Aleister Crowley and Frieda Harris.

Other books that may be a bit easier to understand are Lon Milo DuQuette’s “Understanding Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot”, or Gerd Ziegler’s “Tarot: Mirror of the Soul”. For example, the 8 of Disks shows small bright violet flowers against a lemon yellow background and the 6 of Wands shows red and yellow wands arranged against a delicate lilac background.The present edition was produced by utiliting the most advanced techniques of color seperation and printing, thus faithfully reproducing the stunning colors of the original paintings. The 78 cards were painted by Lady Frieda Harris according to instructions from the occult scholar, Aleister Crowley. The paintings are owned by the Warburg Institute; work was completed by the Institute's in-house specialist, Susan Campion. The quality of the pictures seems to have been retained for this smaller version of the Crowley Thoth Tarot. Though I own and have read several other decks, for the past three years, this is the only deck I use for readings. I've had two other sets of tarot cards for years, and never been able to do much with them, but these literally 'spoke' to me.I chose the 'Thoth Tarot', by Aleister Crowley and Lady Frieda Harris, feeling irresistibly drawn by its great artistic value (surely one of the most beautiful of all decks) and by the mysterious intricacies of the varied symbols, which makes it unique among all decks. The smaller sizes are a very comfortable shuffle and the images do not suffer unduly from the reduced size. It comes with a very small and basic book/guide and a large poster sized guide to a spread (appears to be Celtic cross spread). I would strongly recommend this Thoth Tarot for those who are mature enough to explore further the structures of the universal psyche.

The Crowley Thoth Tarot was first published in 1972, after the death of both Crowley and Lady Harris. My experience however was that the decks ability to expand my areas of interest and knowledge was one of its most attractive features. It will aid you in studying the tradition of modern tarot in greater detail and will enhance your knowledge and use of any other decks in your collection.Originally published in 1969, it has since come out in several different sizes and versions (including varied coloring).
