About this deal

Many camera brands and models are supported from a number of different manufacturers, including Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax, Fuji, Panasonic, Olympus and others. memory card reader to the device, then inserted the same 128 GB card with 53 GB of data, to see how long it would take to copy this data. I was interested in purchasing one of these drives to use for back-up on a forthcoming trip, the main benefit being that it has a buiilt-in SD card reader and can make back-ups without being connected to a computer. Lastly, I would love to see the next iteration with sealed doors, so that it becomes a truly rugged, waterproof and dust-proof device. So as a back up system it’s really useful and reliable, but it also has other functions which I really like.

We’ve partnered with Ontrack to provide protection for routine and extreme data loss scenarios such as drive failure, viruses, and software issues. It is a solid, rugged device that can withstand occasional bumps and drops; it is capable of doing very fast data transfers as a portable storage device, thanks to its SSD storage; its built-in SD card reader can transfer files from SD cards very quickly; its battery lasts a long time and can be used as a power brick to charge up other devices, and the WD My Cloud app works fairly well on iOS devices and is capable of previewing RAW files from many different cameras.

If you work as a team, multiple users can access the content of the My Passport wirelessly at the same time too. folder containing a mix of 177 JPEG and RAW photos from the computer to the drive, and then to read it back again (following a delete and restart to clear any caching). The WD My Passport Wireless SSD is a highly versatile device that lets you backup your photos in the field without lugging around a laptop or power supply. During the configuration process, you’ll be asked if you want to connect the drive to a home or office Wifi network and if you want to make the drive visible on these networks. In theory these should be able to FTP direct to the My Passport Wireless SSD and transfer images without cables or computers inbetween. Secondly, if you connect the drive to a network and enable sharing, then any device on that network will be able to access it – this is great for using the drive as a wireless NAS, but obviously you wouldn’t want to connect it to a public network and enable the same sharing rights.

The idea of a self-contained drive is to provide backup in the field without the need to lug around a laptop.

This is one of my biggest criticisms of the My Passport Wireless SSD – WD should have gone with either USB Type C or USB 3.

Then you can use your phone or tablet to wirelessly connect to the drive and browse or share your work. The one-touch copy button lets you back up photos and videos with the built in SD card reader or the integrated USB port without a laptop or software. With an SSD inside and protective bumper outside, your content is safeguarded from shock, vibrations and drops, even when the drive is in operation. The Sony a9 III is the world's first full-frame mirrorless camera to feature a global electronic shutter with simultaneous readout. Again a faster SD card could see this process completed sooner, but generally I’d insert the card and let it finish the task unattended, sometimes with the drive in a bag or on a car seat. For a photographer wanting to skip a laptop, it would make sense to bring both the main unit and the power bank.
