About this deal

All through the story, the reader also finds clues about African history, slavery and the situation of Black people in Georgian London. Belle’s lonely existence in the big house with her grandparents is in great contrast to Lizzie’s busy home where her parents run a tea house, full of noise and political discussion.

They team up, making notes and following suspects – until they’re plunged into terrible danger themselves. As they go deeper and deeper into the mystery, someone realises how close they are to the truth and tries to silence them, but Lizzie and Belle won’t be silenced easily. The representation was good, especially for a younger audience to read about and I liked the characters and story.

As the chandelier dropped the whole theatre was sent into a commotion but the tension was higher for the Sancho family. It was a look at history through the eyes of young ladies who were close to my own age and thus grew my love of historical fiction. I find this quite interesting as back then there was a lot of racism and the fact that he is on stage is amazing! However as I got into highschool most historical fiction i found was centered around boys and young men. The Lizzie and Belle Mysteries does what, in my view, great historical fiction should do- it tells a cracking story from the view of someone you might not find in the history books. It also includes fantastic character, Ignatius, Sancho and his children (of which Lizzie is one) and wife and the entire premise of a society that doesn’t trust black people , yet is putting on a play of Othello, starring a black man which is controversial, some people are concerned that the only portrayal of black people on stage is of a murderer. The story was exciting and mysterious since until the end it was not clear whether a falling chandelier that almost killed Elizabeth’s father while he was playing Othello in the theatre was an accident or a purposeful act. It is very interesting reading their letters to one another as it portrays their friendship in a way that description couldn’t, and I imagine that the author took time to ensure that the wording of the letters was perfect and even the font that she used resembles the characters in a very clear way.

There’s an absolute bumper crop of brilliant books out this summer, but my pick has to be the first in a brand new series, The Lizzie and Belle Mysteries by JT Williams (June, Farshore). Its originality and freshness comes from the way that real history and historical characters are cleverly incorporated into the story, putting Black history firmly at the centre. Also, the details about social life in the 18th century in London such as theatres, and coffee houses depict a vivid scene for the readers. Thrillingly redolent of eighteenth-century London, the first book in a gripping new mystery series inspired by real Black British figures revolves around sinister onstage goings-on at the Drury Lane theatre. The three main settings are Lizzie’s house (a café) where there are many visitors and it is warm, snug and usually busy. I’m sure that we need more books where race isn’t a subject to talk about, as people need to be represented how they are and not what or who, but the time that this book is set works with the idea well.

The first book in a new thrilling mystery series for 9-12s set in 18th Century London and inspired by real Black British historical figures. I really like books with genres based around mystery and adventure (and therefore detectives), so this book’s title really sparked my curiosity. Although it's marketed as a child's book, it's suitable for readers of all ages who enjoy a good mystery, for it has some complex language. The Lizzie and Belle Mysteries is a thrilling book that follows Lizzie Sancho and her new friend Dido Belle as they start to uncover a plot that puts Lizzie’s father’s life under threat. The second id the theatre, where the crime happens, and is therefore the main place of investigation. Her skin was deep brown, almost as dark as mine, and the tight curls of her hair were gathered up in a bun on top of her head. Once again it is up to the two girls to unveil the truth and put an end to the villainy that plagues the city. It’s a fantastic portrayal of life in England in the past, the fight against slavery and the Parliamentary processes to try and stop it. Set in eighteenth-century London, with all the fun and zest of Hamilton, Bridgerton fashion and inspired by real Black British historical figures. Wilkins already knew about them and knew that they knew too much already, so he broke into the Kenwood house and stole all their case notes.
