From his Goldeneye home on Jamaica's northern shore, Fleming had visited Port Royal on the south of the island, which was once the home port of Sir Henry Morgan, all of which stimulated Fleming's interest. Dust wrapper is repaired to the reverse, with restoration to the extremities of the wraps to the folds of the fly leaves, and to the head and tail of the spine.

The term ‘Negro’ is the most common use of description for any person with black skin, and even the other ‘N’ word slips in once or twice. What is now viewed from a historical context, Ian Fleming lived in a time of great fear and paranoia as the Cold War raged on. I’m sure the pendulum swings more into the misogyny side of things, but I’m interested to see how Fleming handles women in all the rest of the novels.A James Bond thriller and basis for the excellent movie starring Roger Moore, Yaphet Kotto, and Jane Seymour; as of this listing, the only copy bearing Fleming's signature on the market. Big really is Baron Samedi reincarnate and therefore can’t be killed by any normal means, but she has had enough foresight to see that James Bond may be his downfall. Its polarized reception would become characteristic of the series, with those decrying the latest installment facing those who admitted helplessness in the face of the fast-paced intrigue and violence that Fleming so skillfully composed. Development [ edit ] Plot inspirations [ edit ] The rufous-throated solitaire bird provided the name for the book's main female character. Gilbert A2a Black cloth covered boards with some bowing, slight discoloring to gilt on lower half of Jonathan Cape logo on spine; faint pink stain to part of bottom and side edge; toning and some rubbing around edges, in colorful dust jacket with a coin-sized stain to the inside of the back flap.

Set in London, the United States and Jamaica, it was first published in the UK by Jonathan Cape on 5 April 1954. Live and Let Die was the first of many James Bond adventures to be set in the author's beloved Caribbean. A very handsome, clean example of this scarce title and perfect for the Fleming collector who is looking for a beautiful first edition, first impression of Live And Let Die with an original striking first edition, second state dust jacket!Fleming wrote the novel at his Goldeneye estate in Jamaica before his first book, Casino Royale, was published; much of the background came from Fleming's travel in the US and knowledge of Jamaica. The novel deals with the themes of the ongoing East–West struggle of the Cold War, including British and American relations, Britain's position in the world, race relations, and the struggle between good and evil. The jive talking in the club was definitely cringy, plus not sure what Nigger Heaven is, other than racist!

Overall, a highly presentable copy of this author's 2nd book, greatly enhanced with Fleming's signature. Ken Lewis's printed name is omitted from the rare first issue dust wrapper, due to a printing mistake in the titles production. The back of the dust jacket includes a blurb for Casino Royale, there is light toning to the inside edges.Fleming had a long-held interest in pirates, from the novels he read as a child through to films such as Captain Blood (1935) with Errol Flynn, which he enjoyed watching. It’s funny when you reread a book, especially one that you read years (decades ago), even more when it was written in the 1950’s, become part of popular culture and see it with modern eyes.
