About this deal

The Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme begins in the earliest years with the Foundations for Phonics programme, which we deliver to our Pre-School children. Our Foundations section includes a complete offer for Nurseries, which includes guidance, training and resources for three areas: Foundations for Phonics, Foundations for Language and Foundations for a Love of Reading. Children start phase 2 of the Little Wandle phonics programme as soon as possible after starting Reception, usually week 2 of the Autumn term when children are settled in their new surroundings.

This system judges the level of difficulties based on how many letters per word, how many words per page, how many lines per page, how many pages per book not on reading progression. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. My DS is currently reading at the hardest end of Phase 2 (summer born reception) which probably equates to the easier end of red books using the list someone linked earlier. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.

Please speak to a member of staff if you require more information about how we deliver the Little Wandle programme to children with SEND. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading. The SEND Programme isn’t additional practice for those children who are falling slightly behind their peers.

Parents will also be invited to attend a phonics meeting with the Phonics Leader in the Autumn Term. Weekly content grids, lesson templates and ‘How to’ videos all help to ensure that all adults maintain consistency in their teaching and this is monitored half termly by the Reading Leader and SLT so that any misconceptions or inconsistencies can be rectified as soon as possible. However, for some children it may be best for them to be part of the main lesson and then work with an adult.

There are two different types of books that pupils bring home: reading practice and books to share for pleasure. I’d agree with Biff, Chip and Kipper era books just being less words, some of the words in even the easiest bands of these books aren’t easy at all!

We anticipate that most children and young people who follow it will be in specialist provision of some kind. This could be by showing pictures or objects with the sound in and getting the children to guess or find the sound. To meet the demands of the new programme we have invested heavily as a school in the matching Harper Collins reading books for both the main Little Wandle programme and the Rapid Catch Up programme for ages 7+.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Featuring an exciting mix of stories and non-fiction to foster a love of reading in all children, matched to the Little Wandle progression. As you will know from our recent phonics meeting for parents and carers, the school has introduced a new phonics programme this year which we are very excited about and are sure will help your child develop the phonetic knowledge they need to become confident, happy and fluent readers. If you find the book band on this for a few recent books your DC has brought home and then look at book band per year group expectations it'll give you that broad idea of how she is doing for her age.Phase 3 includes ai ee igh oa oo oo ar or ur er ow oi ear air and double letters (‘ure’ has been omitted but the most common ‘ure’ words sure and pure are included as tricky words in Phase 3). Children need to practice and secure their phonic decoding skills until they become automatic and fluent readers. the Rapid Catch-up fluency assessments when children are reading the Phase 5 set 3, 4 and 5 books for age 7+.
