About this deal

I skipped over the entire middle of the book and was easily able to pick up right before the 70th birthday party, without feeling I missed a beat. Ignore what everyone else is saying and absolutely do not read The Paper Palaceby Miranda Cowley Heller. Each morning, buzzing, he slung his legs off the bed and sat bolt upright, naked, allowing his male parts to hang over the edge of the mattress, and did his best to capture these jangled dreams, recording what details he could remember in a spiral-bound notebook kept by his bedside. Somehow this book covers so many topics but never feels like our author was trying to check off all the boxes. He exhaled audibly and resumed his list of banal recommendations: limit stress, exercise daily, eat a balanced diet.

Brodeur’s portrayal of Adam kept me engaged, even when some parts of the narrative read as garnish to me.This book accompanied on a book tour of my own and I looked forward to the moment I could hop into bed with it each night. I loved Adrienne Brodeur's memoir, Wild Game, and Little Monsters, her new novel, has that same raw authenticity. I get that Abby acknowledges that she changed her mind once she got pregnant, but it always gives me a sour taste in my mouth when I read that particular plotline because it comes up so often (and I personally just ran into it in back-to-back books) and the alternatives—person who doesn’t want children doesn’t have them and is happy; person who wants children doesn’t/can’t have them and realizes they’re happy without—are not nearly so prevalent.

As Adam’s special birthday celebration approached, the tension between the family members began to escalate. If he so much as glanced at a woman the wrong way—or, God forbid, commented on her appearance—he’d get an indignant earful from someone, most likely his granddaughter, Tessa, or his daughter, Abby. Howl with laughter and squeal with delight at this monstrously funny picture book and audio CD from number one bestselling author David Walliams, illustrated by the awesome Adam Stower! Meanwhile, all three of them might be missing what’s happening under their nose: their father losing his mind more and more to the secrets of the ocean he’s desperately studying. One thing was for sure: he’d be damned if he would abide by the half-baked blather of a child doctor.

They keep the seething caldron of their history barely tamped down while warily staying in each other’s orbit, due in part to the remote artist’s studio tucked back on the sand dunes that their deceased mother Emily owned, in which Abby now lives and works, and which was left to Ken before Abby was born. The culturally specific language in Little Monsters is lively, au courant, and at times delightfully salty, giving insight to the times and nuance to all personalities in a tightly crafted story of a family that would like to connect, but is in denial of its individual and collective wounds. The only way to proceed is to steady your nerves, take a breath, and plunge into the depths, trusting that the darkness will hold you. This very much just feels like we follow the MC’s back and forth until the very end of the story which just didn’t resonate with me. As the novel opens, Adam is approaching his seventieth birthday, staring down his mortality and fading relevance.Little Monsters is packed with humour, warmth and wonderful characters and has been an absolute pleasure to illustrate. The depictions of sexism and the patriarchy are nuanced, allowing the reader to see how the characters have been shaped by these forces without giving the novel itself a sexist or patriarchal feel.
