About this deal

Sinfield became the first rugby league player to be nominated for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, finishing in second place behind Andy Murray in 2015. But in recent years has shown heroism of a very different kind through his selfless and extraordinary fundraising for motor neurone disease (MND), the terminal illness that has affected his best mate and former teammate Rob Burrow. Sinfield's epic challenges have included running 7 marathons in 7 days, and running over 101 miles in 24 hours. Told with Sinfield's characteristic warmth, dry wit and inspirational leadership, The Extra Mile is the story of an astonishing life, of an enduring friendship, of perseverance against the most difficult of challenges, and of a remarkable, humble human being who has defied the odds. Kevin doesn’t really seem to have social media, and seems quite a private person, so to be able to get some of the insight into his psychology is really good.

When the same thing happened at another event soon after, with Burrow unable to say words with an ‘s’ in them, like ‘solicitor’ and ‘necessity’, he knew something was amiss. If the coach is willing to run whatever distance he has to run to fight a disease, why shouldn’t players run hard for 80 minutes? With your help, we can build a state-of-the-art MND Care Centre, to give people with MND and their families the best possible care and support. In Autumn 2020 Kevin Sinfield ‘just went for a run for a mate’ after his former Rugby League teammate Rob Burrow was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2019. And here again, another insight into Kevin Sinfield: that he believes physical sacrifice is the basis for success in team sports, that players have to go that bit further than the opposition are willing to. If thoughts of young people growing fat and idle in a rugby-less void is rather depressing, the reader’s mood is lifted by Sinfield’s remarkable charity work for his former team-mate Rob Burrow and the MND community.

As my first autobiography that I am reading, I can only respect this man because he seriously ran over 60km everyday for a week straight and then went for a 101 mile marathon to fund enough money for his friend and all the other people affected by MND. He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday honours for his efforts, along with the Freedom of Leeds and a special BBC Award for his fundraising. And all the way through he is thanking the people around him for helping him to get through the trials he did. The MND community have always given us incredible support and we wanted to find a way that we could show that support for more people around the country.Your donations will help the great work Motor Neurone Disease Association, Leeds Hospitals Charity, The Darby Rimmer MND Foundation, Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and My Name'5 Doddie Foundation do.

Perhaps rightly, and not surprisingly, Kev attributes the majority to his fundraising efforts - but not told for self-appreciation or back-patting. Thanks to comprehensive BBC coverage, his charity runs have probably earned him even greater fame than his rugby. In November 2017, Doddie and his trustees launched the registered charity, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. I was dependent on everyone playing well for me to get me where I wanted to go: the Lancashire starting side. I brought my copy at one of Kevin’s book signings, he’s just as friendly in person as he comes across in the book! There were some stories which scratched a surface and didn't delve much deeper which I would have liked but there was a lot to cram in I guess. It’s a must read, inspiring, thought provoking and overall a top read about a man’s career that has trod so many different paths.
