There was also plenty of Schadenfreude to go around while never losing sight of what really matters in life (I never agreed with the notion that once you become a killer you're not better than any other murderer - there IS nuance and some just deserve getting killed but would never have to face any justice). He would so have loved this because the three stories presented by Holmes are so meticulously built that it would take a Colombo to catch these perpetrators. Where the book REALLY shines is the third act: we get to see the murderers-in-training take their new skills into the real world, and see how they fare.

There is a bizarre sense of morality and some of the most unnecessarily convoluted plotlines that I have ever read.Murder Your Employer: The McMasters Guide to Homicide is an original and fun story, and the narrators definitely add to the listening experience. What you do learn is that there are master deceptions going on to keep them all on their toes and also ensure that the Conservatory remains a secret.

In the middle I had to remind myself that just like in the song ‘Escape’ there had to be another twist in each story. Some terminology that may be used in this description includes: Bookplate Highly sought after by some collectors, a book plate is an inscribed or decorative device that identifies the owner, or former. After all, it’s difficult to obtain a student loan for a school that not only denies its own existence but teaches its students how to deny other people theirs. Whilst I did like Cliff and Gemma’s characters, they weren’t enough to make me enjoy the book as a whole.It felt a bit gimmicky and it took a while until I realized there was actually a story here, and not an actual guide (a tweak in the description could help). It's also a story I didn't want to end, so apparently I'm a touch on the fickle-side about this listen. Unfortunately for me this time Simon Vance was so monotone and long drawn that I couldn’t keep track of who was speaking when. A delightful mix of witty wordplay, breathtaking twists and genuine intrigue, Murder Your Employer will gain you admission into a wholly original world, cocooned within the most entertaining book about well-intentioned would-be murderers you’ll ever read.

Strong narrative flow helps push the story along, though there are times it lags and kept me waving my hand in the air in hopes of spurring things along.

I'm a sucker for worldbuilding and when it's done well I will eat up every miniscule detail like a little snack and MYE was a whole feast of visual, auditory, tactile, gustatory and olfactory imagery and the illustrations were the cherry on top. With all of the detailing and overtly explaining how they all learned and planned their murders - the methods were smart, don't get me wrong - it became kind of repetitive. Today Mandie is taking time to review the book that every boss hope’s you’ll never read 😉 Just kidding. It was messy, the writing didn't work for me, there were way too many unneccessary details and I felt no connection to the characters.

Cliff Iverson is a put-upon engineer whose boss Merrill Fiedler has cut corners, endangering the public. It all went a bit downhill when the book moved on to following three students through three murders. This is a thriller like no other, told as a piece of fiction and journal of one of the new students at The McMasters Conservatory for the Applied Arts. Rupert Holmes does well to create an eerie and thought-provoking book, whose realism is left to the reader’s imagination.I’m honestly not sure that any book exclusively about murder has the right to be so wonderfully wholesome, but this one is.
