About this deal

On March 9 2010, New Hampshire and the nation bid farewell to Doris "Granny D" Haddock, a beloved friend, legendary reformer, and founder of Open Democracy. But she's also exceedingly generous to most she describes; she sees the world as a beautiful place and can usually say at least one positive thing about everyone she is around. Regardless of your politial persuasion, I think you'll find Granny D's book a fun and inspiring read. She was remembered by presidents, governors, senators, members of congress, the media, and countless friends and admirers across the United States for her uplifting rhetoric, her feisty down-to-earth spirit, and her unflinching commitment to the cause of democracy for all. But it's also just about the people who helped her along the way, some of her past history (this wasn't her first foray into activism), and finally just the toll of the walk itself.

Although her entire life was dedicated to service, Granny D waited until her ninetieth year to enter the national spotlight.Haddock worked closely with state representative Betty Hall, another New Hampshire grandmother, on campaign finance reform. These include Granny D: Walking Across America in My Ninetieth Year (Villard, 2001), Granny D: You're Never Too Old to Raise a Little Hell (Villard, 2003), and Granny D's American Century (University Press of New England, 2012). In God’s sovereignty, He allowed her body to face the battles of cancer, age, painful infections, and weakness. On April 21, 2000, 90 year old Granny D, with 31 other Americans, was arrested for reading the Declaration of Independence in the Capitol and charged with the offense of Demonstrating in the Capitol Building.

Haddock requested a name change of her middle name to "Granny D", the name by which she had long been known. Granny D walked roughly ten miles each day for 14 months, traversing California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia, making many speeches along the way. She entered a plea of guilty, then made a statement to the court reiterating "campaign finance reform" as the purpose of their demonstration. Several dozen members of Congress walked the final miles with her during the final day's walk from Arlington National Cemetery to the Capitol on the National Mall.I was impressed by Granny D's grace in dealing with the people she met during her walk, including those who wanted to walk along. In 1999, she undertook an audacious 3,200-mile walk across the United States for campaign finance reform.

But it is our constant intention that it should be a government of, by and for the people, not the special interests. When you get a chance, read her journals and you will hear her prayers, her worries, her fears, her heart, her tears, and her anxieties. Shortly after that we were asked to include soul food and bar-b-q plates to our menu and we were off! Pierogi are dumplings of unleavened dough, first boiled ,then baked or pan fried with butter and carmelized onions. Haddock had eight grandchildren: Heidi, Gillian, David Bradley, William, Alice, Joseph, Lawrence, and Raphael.C., to raise awareness of the issue of national campaign-finance reform as she describes her lifelong commitment to activism and adventure--from feminism in the 1930s to a 1960 effort to stop nuclear testing near an Eskimo fishing village. The couple retired to Dublin, New Hampshire, in 1972, and there, she served on the Planning Board and was active in the community. She attended Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, for three years before marrying James Haddock.
