About this deal

But if you have visited the place, walked its streets, smelled its air, eaten its food, experienced the nature of it, you know what this book is. The tenements and the streets are packed with life, and the art is so expressive you can hear the crowds and smell the food cooking in the apartments.

So what the approach in Grafity’s Wall is is a choice, a very deliberate choice to go loose, rough, to achieve evocation.

Over the next weeks, he begins creating a mural on the wall, one that chronicles the lives of his friends: a local low-level fixer named Jay who harbours dreams of being a rapper. I’ve always thought of comics as music on paper and you can kind of structure your stories like songs. four children in mumbai are united by conditions at a broken-down wall - one that will end up being a canvas for the image of their lives in a spot that both moves and persecutes, unpredictably, and in equivalent measure. It’s a book of dreams and dreamers, of poor, struggling people hoping for a better tomorrow, of daring to dream, because why shouldn’t they? I found myself rooting for the protagonists while at the same time struggling with the messy artwork and somewhat boring plot.

Loved the characters and the illustrations and the themes around coming of age especially in a place like Mumbai which reminded me of NYC. Still giving the book 4 stars because it’s a real masterwork and clearly a lot of love went into it, including the many specific details about life in Mumbai. Nothing is made here, in this place, not anymore," the man says to his son, eliding a look in the eye to observe a bruise on the boy's right cheek.Anand RK is, of course, the key player here we haven’t yet touched on and this is very much his comics debut. There is a looseness to the characters’ anatomy, but they all look lived in, as does the incredibly detailed backgrounds. The story was too short for me to really care about any of the characters, except maybe Chasma, and the art was a little jarring to look at sometimes. Ram V’s certainly written about Mumbai a bit, but this is sort of the opposite of that Miller approach.
