About this deal

In case you didn't know, Current 93, Coil and Nurse with Wound are all bands that rose in the wake of Throbbing Gristle / Psychic TV in the late 70s / early 80s.

Newly expanded black and white paperback edition, featuring 60 pages of extra interviews and reflections from Furfur, a collection of bonus material published in a limited edition in 2016.

Nicht nur findet er ein nahezu optimales Gleichgewicht darin, wer wann und warum zu Wort kommt, denn ein Gros des Buches besteht aus originell und clever eingebauten Interview-Segmenten. The enamel pin is still clipped to the front cover of Furfur; the pages have a slight indent where the pin has been pressed into the book over the years. And this book is an exploration of not just the bands, but their influences; from David Tibet (Current 93)'s religious obsessions, and his other stranger obsessions such as his Noddy obsession, to Coil's mystical, ritualistic ideal of Austin Osman Spare and the like, and Stephen Stapleton's (Nurse With Wound) more music-based fascination with Krautrock, the book catalogues, expounds and places these influences within the canon. Leading to a chain of unpleasant retorts, reprimands and bitter critiques in the Letters section of the aforementioned Wire.

It’s fun to hang out with these mystics, though sometimes their drug-fueled religious fetishism can get a bit portentous, it’s never short of entertaining. The music of Coil, Nurse With Wound and Current 93 in some ways couldn't be more different but in other ways they're all kindred spirits. In the course of my explorations, I discovered a label in the UK, World Serpent Distribution, that handled a number of artists who scratched that itch for me.

In November 2004, John Balance, Coil’s charismatic but troubled frontman, would fall to his death in his and his partner Sleazy’s house in Weston. I desperately wanted to read England’s Hidden Reverse when it first came out, but couldn’t afford a copy.

Throbbing Gristle had created a kind of defiled psychedelia that all three bands stretched and redefined in their own ways, drawing on the esoteric Magickal lore of Aleister Crowley, Austin Osman Spare and a host of other fringe figures, and pursuing a common interest in altered states of consciousness. The discographies of the three artists at the heart of Keenan’s book exist in a constant state of flux; listening to one album from any of the artists mentioned on the cover will hardly reveal the whole of their sound. As well as the unparalleled joy of keeping the publication alive, you'll receive benefits including exclusive editorial, podcasts, and specially-commissioned music by some of our favourite artists. Neuware - An expanded edition of the classic exploration of the English esoteric musical underground with the first biography of Coil, Current 93, and Nurse With Wound. His apocalyptic visions and interests are endlessly fascinating, and I could literally listen to him all day.Despite knowing NWW and C93, I've never really listened to them, so I was surprised to be just as engrossed in their story, as much as Coil's. Coil had successfully rebirthed themselves into their lunar phase, opening themselves up to everything they were closed off to before to create two of their masterpieces, the Moon’s Milk EPs (1998-9) andboth volumes of Musick To Play In The Dark (1999-2000) . Anyway, there was never a dull moment in reading England’s Hidden Reverse, and to those fans of Coil or the others who aren’t sure whether to pick a copy up, you simply must not hesitate. An expanded edition of the classic exploration of the English esoteric musical underground—with the first biographies of Coil, Current 93, and Nurse With Wound. This book focuses on the intertwined triptych of the bands Coil, Current 93, and Nurse with Wound, and the musicians behind them, from their early days with Genesis P-Orridge with Throbbing Gristle/Psychic TV in London to their many exciting collaborations and innovations through time.

I can't quite put my finger on why I feel this way - but I felt like the author was one of those people that was a bit stuck in an either/or mentality when it came to underground music versus that which is more pop - or just more well known. An expanded edition of the classic exploration of the English esoteric musical underground—with the first biography of Coil, Current 93, and Nurse With Wound. Because I’m a weirdo, my last few years of high school were soundtracked by Coil, C933, NWW and Throbbing Gristle.

the only thing that could have improved this book is a detailed discography of the three bands covered. With Gen passing as well in 2020, the world of the 80s and 90s underground subculture described in England’s Hidden Reverse seems to be fading ever faster in time’s rearview mirror. From 2005 to 2015 he co-ran Volcanic Tongue, an online retailer and magazine dedicated to the enthused presentation of contemporary underground music. i've always loved coil's music more than the other two, but i have to say reading about tibet's life and obsessions and worldview is by far the most fascinating; reading this definitely had me going into his back catalog, along with almost everyone here, even the smallest of players seemed to have a niche carved out somewhere, if you travel backwards enough, into the past. This new volume contains almost 100 pages of extra material culled from Furfur, a collection of interviews with musicians and artists whose careers intersected with the bands', initially published alongside Strange Attractor's first limited edition of the book.
