Originally made as a teaching tool, the first half covers all the levels of the filmmaking process in detail, as well as offering plenty of wonderful behind-the-scenes footage from the making of Dawn of the Dead.

Colours are bright when they need to be (the helicopter paintwork is a good example) and naturalistic in the right lighting, though many scenes have a brown/green hue that may well be down to location lighting and/or colour balance on the original neg. While this trailer might only get a handful people interested who would not have been otherwise, it's really just a fun side-project.The project then expanded to a second disc to include more related material, and eventually a third disc.

Also included are the US Trailer (2:37), which soberly describes the film as "a horrible, hauntingly accurate vision of the mindless excesses of a society gone mad," the German Trailer (0:58), Radio Spots (2:23), TV Spots (1:28), five reviews of the film (including one by Stephen King), and three trailers for Arrow's first Masters of Giallo DVD releases. Finally, the ‘Zombies and Bikers’ extended featurette offers an entertaining look at what it was like to be one of the film’s many extras.

Disc 3 has a PC accessible BD-ROM folder, containing high quality 600dpi scans of each source's VHS cover and tape, along with an MP3 copy of my 2014 Dawn Of The Dead - Extended Cut OST project. The 4K UHD disc is nothing short of superb in the video department, handily outclassing the Blu-ray, and while it recycles the same 5. The tenement scene early on is brutal and intense, but later on more comedy seeps in and the whole wish-fulfilment side of having a mall all to themselves, on top of having S. Romero may push his luck a little by having the bikers hit the zombies with custard pies, but it's very much in the spirit of their rampage – for them the zombies are little more than arcade amusements and the threat they represent has yet to turn round and bite them.His work here maybe isn’t as refined as his later work, but this is purely due to the sheer volume of effects in the film.

The horror is still there though, and even if there aren’t any jump scares or particularly tense stand-offs, the film is still disturbing at times. Effects are spread across the speakers, with some heft supplied by the sub; it is quite atmospheric with the surrounds coming into play, obviously limited by the source, this is never-the-less natural sounding. Though again seeing a group of people holed up in a bid to survive the onslaught outside, the tone and scope is very different. Only thing is, rest and relaxation is the last thing that she’s going to have as her daughter mutates into the living dead before her very eyes and her husband infected with the same evil in the process.A great, great horror film infused with a smart and multi-layered social commentary (which I've only touched on above), and whose style and effects were to set the standard and future direction for the genre as a whole.
