Instead, you're constantly being required to check that you understand what's being said, and therefore you're much more likely to remember it all. Written by internationally renowned author Stella Cottrell, this is an essential resource for students looking to refine their thinking, reading and writing skills. With clear explanations, relevant examples and plenty of exercises throughout, this book helps students to develop their analytical reasoning skills and apply them to a range of tasks including reading, note-making and writing.I bought this book in preparation for uni and it has been very helpful in 'reading between the lines' and clarifying strong and weak arguments.

I found that a lot of it was really just common sense, but the book spells out what common sense actually is in the context of responding to written arguments, which is helpful and made me realise quite how much is involved in a process that I previously took for granted. This article will also talk about the critical aspects of this form of thinking as well as some critical questions that can be asked to further develop thinking. Stella was formerly Director of Lifelong Learning at the University of Leeds, UK, and Pro Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching at the University of East London, UK. She is the million copy best-selling author of The Study Skills Handbook , The Palgrave Student Planner , The Exam Skills Handbook , Study Skills Connected , You2Uni and Skills for Success , a key text on personal development planning. All used books might have various degrees of writing, highliting and wear and tear and possibly be an ex-library with the usual stickers and stamps. Her other titles include The Study Skills Handbook, Critical Thinking Skills, Skills for Success, The Macmillan Student Planner, The Exam Skills Handbook and Mindfulness for Students. Good book, especially for people that are just starting university and who may need a good "tutorial" for learning a solid reading and writing method.

The book is an instructive source for those who want to ameliorate their writing skills ( for eg, writing an essay) in analytical ways. Critical thinking includes the component skills of analyzing arguments, making inferences using inductive or deductive reasoning, judging or evaluating, and making decisions or solving problems. Note: I try to face my challenges head on, and so needless to say the book is aiding me in many areas. Especially recommended for university students, particularly at the start of their undergraduate degree as it is vitally important to develop these critical skills before reaching your final year and have to complete your dissertation. Her titles include The Study Skills Handbook , Critical Thinking Skills , Skills for Success , The Student Planner, The Exam Skills Handbook , Mindfulness for Students and titles in the 50 Ways series .

Used books have different signs of use and might not include supplemental materials such as CDs, Dvds, Access Codes, charts or any other extra material. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. Only thing that I disagree with the author is that early on the book, the author insist on being non-emotional while accessing an argument. But then, sometimes it is imperative to get through the rudiments of a subject - to develop deeper insights into the subject.Stella Cottrell's student-centred approach demystifies critical thinking and breaks down a complex subject into manageable chunks. As a university student, this book was recommended to me by my lecturer, so it came highly praised and it has certainly lived up to it! This book helped me immensely with my critical thinking skills, so much so I can see the benefits in other parts of my education. It also contains new and updated examples that link to current affairs, showing the importance of critical thinking as a lifelong skill.
