About this deal

At that point there were fantastic sections that dig into what truly defines “good wine” and how variable the definition can be. The brouhaha finally culminated in a series of tweets by Eric Asimov, the New York Times’s wine critic.

About: Cork Dork: A Wine-Fueled Adventure Among the Obsessive Sommeliers, Big Bottle Hunters, and Rogue Scientists Who Taught Me to Live for Taste is a memoir written by Bianca Bosker. It was recently published on 3/28/17 by Penguin Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House, paperback, 352 pages.

bringing] readers on her year-plus adventure of learning about everything from production to consumption. She starts at the bottom of the ladder as a Cellar Rat to learn the basics on wine and to get free tastings on variety of wines producers makes or restaurants purchases. In this delightfully written and keenly observed book, Bianca Bosker helps us become connoisseurs not only of wine but also of people whose passions would more aptly be described as obsessions. The descriptors get wackier and wackier, not just things like green apples or blackberries, but "wet asphalt", "surgical glove", asparagus pee", "dried cardboard", and "salami farts". The book also showcases the variety of personalities and motivations of people who are attracted to the profession.

Bosker went on to serve as The Huffington Post’s executive tech editor until 2014, when she quit her job to find out “What’s the big deal about wine? The key message here is: There are some simple ways to cleverly detect a wine’s characteristics, and some simple terms to describe them. But I resist the idea that the best way to get to know wine is to pattern yourself after a sommelier.Throughout the year we will be hosting some fantastic evenings, such as wine tastings, cheese pairings and many more.

The resulting book is a delightful blend of science, memoir and encounters with people who are deadly serious about wine. One of the other key characters in the book is Annie, a woman supporting a family who had worked in Virginia Beach restaurants for decades. Bianca reflects on her mentor’s definition of what makes a good wine: that one sip leads to another sip. However, if you still need convincing, I’d recommend listening to the wine episode of the greatest food podcast of all time, Gastropod, which features an extensive interview with Bosker herself.Intellectually, we know that they have a useful function and are a cheerful adaptation in a complex ecosystem. Reporter Bianca Bosker takes the reader along on her quixotic quest to become a certified sommelier, a journey you will enjoy even if you aren't particularly interested in wine. But is chronicling an arduous journey to achieve a kind of knowledge the same as demystifying that knowledge for others? In Cork Dork, Bianca Bosker takes us along on a joyful journey of discovery into the ‘soul’ of wine, filled with wit and insight at every step. Duncan Hines, a traveling salesman who jotted down notes on clean, good restaurants around the US to send to family and friends, was the OG self-made restaurant critic.
