About this deal

The author a noted military historian takes the reader throughout the conflict from start to finish. I'm giving it three stars because over the course of the book I decided that I should have probably just read the wikipedia page on the Falklands War.

If you love nonfiction and want to be a peeping Tom in the lives of peaceful protesters you should definitely read this book. He was convinced that Argentina's numbers, air force and proximity to the theater of operations would lead to a decisive defeat of Great Britain. The average age of the 199 men on board the HMS Ardent was 23 in May 1982 when she made a midnight run into Falkland Sound, ahead of the British amphibious group. Interviewing mostly officers (some very senior) as well as some soldiers from the Argentine Army and Navy (although their Air Force declined to participate) Middlebrook brought to life the experiences of those who commanded in the war and covered it from as many angles as possible, to challenge a great deal of what we knew about the war as much as that which we did not.

Some British Army and Air Force officers were opposed to the operation because they thought it would fail. uk - Latest offers and best deals on Military, Combat, Army, Police, Emergency, Safety and Waterproof Boots. K. An almost impossible task completed by the military 8000 mile from home and operating at the extreme limit of their supply line. We first had the fantastic war, the unreal war created by the media where a little Argentinian propeller plane could attack the Hermes aircraft carrier and sink it: those things were fed to us through the media. This said, the book remains an excellent insight and an indispensable addition to any Falklands War library. I found the high attrition rate of Naval and other vessels and the significant number of wounded and killed members of the British forces to be somewhat alarming. Well written, descriptive and an entertaining read with supported maps and photographs and facts, highly recommended!

I'd also recommend Brigadier Julian Thompson's No Picnic: 3 Commando Brigade in the South Atlantic, 1982, for that reason, alongside Sea Harrier Over the Falklands: A Maverick at War by Sharkey Ward - with three air-to-air kills, Sharkey Ward was not only the leading Harrier pilot, but the first to demonstrate that the sub-sonic Harrier could compete with faster and ostensibly superior Argentine jets. Mercau shows the importance of an idea of a Greater Britain and how the 1982 Falklands War signalled its unravelling, opening questions about Britain's national identity that still persist. With the sudden Argentine invasion of the remote Falkland Islands on 2 April 1982 the United Kingdom found itself at war.

Anyone with an interest in the Falklands should read it as it really sets the story straight, and shows us yet again the bravery and sacrifice shown during the conflict. Incorporating vivid first-hand accounts and illustrated with photographs, the book also portrays the daily life of an escort under wartime conditions and describes only too clearly the tension, fear, storm, cold, disaster and sorrow which were so close at hand. Generally, this book does a good job of informing the professional and amateur war historians as to the particulars of the war. the text is a groundbreaking study of the Falklands War through the lens of British political culture. The book being advertised in London Bridge station at the moment is Four Weeks in May: The Loss of HMS Coventry.

A full sized aircraft carrier capable of handling conventional aircraft and more and better equipped anti-aircraft ships would have made an enormous difference. Solid history of a war that in retrospect was fought on the seam between old and new ways of fighting. It wasn’t the biggest force I’d seen but, considering that it was the other side of the world and that they had been assembled in such a hurry, it was very impressive and a truly memorable achievement. He just couldn't seem to grasp the fact that over here we had Argentina, a country with a history of governmental instability and a military whose history is primarily political and, as it turned out, was not well trained or equipped. Briefly covers the political context and opening moves, and then gets into a close-focus day by day about operations in the South Atlantic.
