About this deal

The tightrope between the exotic and the domestic that the Babar books walk is central to the French imagination of the first half of the twentieth century: the great desert opens onto the great city; the beautiful patterning of the carpet gives life to the gray light of the Île de France; we dream of the elephants, and the elephant dreams of a green suit and a motorcar. I bought this for my 2 year old nephew and would suggest that this is probably the minimum age for this story.

But from Jean de Brunhoff's first story to the stories still being created by Laurent de Brunhoff, there is a sensibility that speaks to the civilized and loving needs in all of us that never change. Once he arrives at the forest, he's made king, gets married, and is off to who knows where for his honeymoon. The fragile archives that trace the fascinating history of the little elephant are too delicate for permanent display but are bursting with colour and characterisation.Jean de Brunhoff finessed the characters in his initial sketches and crafted a handmade mock-up of the completed story in which he perfected the rhythm of the pages. The first seven Babar albums were reprinted and millions of copies were sold all around the world, but they were all abridged; they had 30 pages instead of the original 48. Babar, following his mother's murder at the hands of white hunters, blithely follows their path back to the white city. I wasn't expecting him to fall in love with one of his cousin elephants but there isn't much emphasis placed on it so I'm sure children wouldn't pick up on it! Babar has a dream where he is visited by Misfortune and other demons which are chased away by elephant angels representing Courage, Hope, and other virtues.

The facsimile is an exact copy of the 1931 original, with the colours just as they would have been when the book was first published. The son of a publisher, Jean de Brunhoff was born into a world of books, but before following in his father’s footsteps he briefly fought on the front at the end of World War One. The opportunity to own these rare literary treasures in facsimile is only available to collectors of this delightful limited edition. With Bemelmans’s “Madeline” and Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are,” the Babar books have become part of the common language of childhood, the library of the early mind. This third book in the series follows the founding of Celesteville, named after Babar's wife, a city that would become the setting for many subsequent adventures of the elephant king and his friends. With the original illustrations from Jean de Brunhoff's 1931 classic, this first Babar story has enchanted generations.

And I feel fine saying this - anyone that can find "faults" like what is listed here needs to lighten up. Translated from Jean de Brunhoff's original French, the adventures of the world's most popular elephant and his friends have enchanted an three generations. stormy winds down the balloon on an island, and yet again will the royal couple escape by whale, be marooned on an even smaller island and be rescued by a passing ocean liner only to be turned over to an animal trainer and put to work in a circus. However, it is the perfect pairing of endearing narrative and exquisite illustrations that have ensured Babar’s longevity and universal appeal. Books contained in this set are entitled as follows: Babar's Christmas Tree (near fine condition); Babar's Concert (fine condition); Babar Bakes a Cake (fine condition); and Babar to the Rescue (very good condition). Fifty years ago a little elephant walked out of the jungle and found his way to Paris, where he bought himself a becoming green suit, a pair of shoes with spats, and a black derby hat.
