About this deal

However, in the closing parts of the final act, a sudden jarring plot twist completely obliterates the established tone. Conservative management consultant Colin (Russell Tovey) is visiting the Beth to inspect it ahead of its impending closure, and it’s up to the staff, including the idealistic Dr Valentine (Bally Gill) and head nurse Sister Gilpin (Jennifer Saunders), to win him over and save the hospital. When a small geriatric hospital in Northern England is threatened with closure, the staff and patients rally together to try and save it.

Humble, unglamorous geriatric care is however about vulnerable patients who are heading just one way, and their treatment crucially involves kindness and compassion which have nothing to do with the bottom line. She is found dead the next morning, and the Beth is threatened with legal action by her daughter and son-in-law, who were due to inherit her home only three months later. Indeed, the closer the drama comes to our present times, the more freely it seems willing to blur the lines between historical accuracy and crude sensationalism. The “Beth” is a small community facility which has attracted donations from celebrities after whom various parts of the building are named: the film is mostly set in the Shirley Bassey ward. But it is facing closure from hardfaced Whitehall bean-counters who want giant cost-efficient hospitals or glitzy “centres of excellence” with measurable success rates. The film stars Jennifer Saunders, Bally Gill, Russell Tovey, David Bradley, Derek Jacobi, and Judi Dench. The star cast of Allelujah are : Jennifer Saunders, Lorraine Ashbourne, Russell Tovey, David Bradley, Nicholas Burns, Derek Jacobi, Vincent Franklin, Gerard Horan, Jeffery Kissoon, Julia McKenzie, Arian Nik, Amanda Root and Ross Tomlinson.

Perhaps the thought of a veteran Brit character-actor lineup in a care setting is a little mawkish, and I incidentally still have grim memories of Dustin Hoffman’s unsufferably patronising 2012 film Quartet with Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Pauline Collins and Michael Gambon. For the most part, it’s a heartwarming piece about the indomitable human spirit and the beauty of old age, criticising the prioritisation of profit over people and celebrating the efforts of the NHS in the face of a government that works against their best interests and the interests of those in its care. But this watchable, undemanding drama rolls along capably, enlivened by unmistakably Bennettian gags and drolleries which come along every minute or so. The copyrights of all the content belongs to their respective original owners and streaming service providers. Upon this news, the hospital decides to fight back, galvanising the local community by inviting a news crew to film their preparations for a concert in honour of the hospital’s most distinguished nurse.

A frail incontinent woman named Molly is admitted to the Beth and initially looked after by Valentine, but tended to by Alma the following night. In October 2021, it was announced that Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi, Jennifer Saunders, Bally Gill, Russell Tovey, and David Bradley had joined the cast of the film, [5] and principal photography began later that month.
