About this deal

On test, its foamed plastic walls and carefully designed ventilation system helped it handle this volume quickly, producing excellent compost. We will collect the Import Fees Deposit at the time of your purchase and use it to cover applicable taxes and duties on import. These specialised worms mix and break down the compost quickly and produce a nutrient-rich liquid for use as a fertiliser.

As we move down the list, the nitrogen content increases, and the materials at the bottom of the list contain higher amounts of nitrogen, and are considered ‘ greens‘.This is subject is a whole article in itself, so if you want more information, here is a link to a list of what materials should and shouldn’t go into your compost bin. All woody waste is first shredded by my Bosch Quiet Shredder before being added to the heap – in theory (see below). One third of the cutting is above the growing mix, two thirds inserted into it, with at least two buds above ground. Apart from the fire hazard, at temperatures above 160° (71° C), all of the oxygen is quickly used up, and the compost pile “goes anaerobic”.

The hot composting method, known as the Berkeley method, developed by the University of California, Berkley, is a fast, efficient, high-temperature, composting technique which will produce high quality compost in only 18 days. It is used to create the ideal climate for accelerated composting and is designed so that you are able to remove compost from every side of the composter. Insulated and vented sides help it compost quickly and it's available in a range of sizes, from 250L to 700L (pictured). The compost is then used in the hotel’s vegetable and herb gardens and orchards, to grow organic produce. We and our partners use cookies and similar tech to improve your site experience, show you personalised ads, and learn from your behaviour so we can, for example, recommend products you'll love! To make turning the pile easier, no pieces should be longer than a spading fork is wide, about 10” (25 cm). The nutrient-rich liquid that drains during the composting process is also collected in a tank which clips onto a garden hose, allowing this useful plant tonic to be easily dispensed when watering. To test, put gloves on and squeeze a handful of the compost materials, which should only release one drop of water, or almost drips a drop. They’ll be softened, but still tough and fibrous, and they’ll be threaded through the pile like strands of rope.

For accelerated composting, you’ll need a bin or cylinder that’s at least 3’ x 3’ x 3’ (1m x 1m x 1m)—larger, if you’re planning on winter composting. Dehydrating the organic product by using special compressing technology, it can reduce the water content of the final product. However, because of its thin sides, it was one of the slowest composters on test, so if you want results quickly you may want one of the other models featured here. Getting the moisture ratio right Shredded paper helps soak up excess water, but can take quite a while to break-down. This can happen occasionally in a static compost pile, but it will happen in a hot compost pile, if you don’t turn it when the temperature exceeds 155° (68° C).As I show in the picture, even though it is raining in cold where I am and 40°, yesterday it was in the 60s and sunny and today the composter is trapping enough heat to keep it 80° inside all day. Whack it into 3-4” (8-10 cm) pieces with the machete, being careful to keep your fingers at least 8” (20 cm) back from where the blade will cut.
